How Many Daily Drivers On Here?

I'm wondering how many on here use their trucks as true daily drivers? I'm talking about the ones that drive their trucks everywhere they go, whether its to work, pick up the kids at school, fishing, Lowe's, going on vacation, or wherever. I drove a 64 shortbed stepside pretty much all through the 90's as a daily driver, but eventually got to the point where I wanted the creature comforts of a newer truck and broke down and bought a later model with all the modern conveniences. I was just wondering, seeing how most of these trucks are around 50 years old now, how many folks out there are using them as their everyday vehicle?

Re: How Many Daily Drivers On Here?

The only thing stopping me is AC in my 62. I love my truck. I'd marry it and have little truck babies with it if it were legal in any of the 50 states.

Sold my 2000 model holden ute in Feb when I got my 64 on the road its been my daily since no problems so far, wouldn't upgrade to a later model truck they just don't give you the same feeling when your driving. My avatar is my truck

Take it everywhere. So far, so good, just a few minor problems.

Re: How Many Daily Drivers On Here?

I don't know if I can claim "daily driver" as I do have other trucks as well but I drive it to work, take the kids to school, go grocery shopping, take it hunting, etc... I love my truck the style the look the feel its great, but its a tool and gets used as one. The best is showing up at Lowes to get supplies for a job maybe 20 2X4's, and 10 sheets of drywall, and some OSB well you get the idea. Most every time I am there I get a your not putting all of that in there, yep, yes I am. Then stop at the plumbing supply and maybe bet a furnace or a hot water tank. At the end of the day there is probably a load of scrap metal to the junkyard we go. They look at me like I am nuts. But the oils changed regularly, everything extremely well maintained, and it runs like a dream. I don't hesitate to hop in it and go anywhere. Wish I had pictures loaded to show.

I take mine all over the place. Drive it at least 3-4 days a week. Just installed power steering and power brakes. Now I want to drive it even more!

Re: How Many Daily Drivers On Here?

If I drive (I'm often on my motorcycles) I drive my truck. I haul my bikes with it, pick up lumber and bulding supplys, whatever. With the 700R4 I can get 21mpg if I stay at 65-70 on the freeway, so I'm happy.

Re: How Many Daily Drivers On Here?

Shortly after I picked up my '63, I spent about a week doing upgrades & repairs, as it was bone stock.....like the day it rolled off the transport (add 48 years).
During that rather productive winter week, I managed to;

* Remove the A.M. mirrors, locate & restore the correct ones
* R & R the gauge cluster for repairs & mods
* Install the Y2K Seats
* Locate, refurb & install the off-road lights
* Replace the original rear diff with a refurbed corp. 12 bolt...strapped
* Replace the OE front diff with a D-44
* New 2.5" exhaust & muffler
* New shocks
* R & R the 420 for inspection....repairs, brgs & seals.
* Same with the transfer case
* Installed Hydro-boost & deal with clutch MC (the clutch MC is a story in itself)
* Installed Saginaw P-steering box....(The hard way..I hadn't seen Captn-Fab's hardware yet)
* Fabbed bracketry & installed the Hydro-boost pump.
* Built & installed axillary breaker and relay box....Upgraded some wiring installed the 1-wire alternator.
* Replaced the heater motor with new.
* Bolted on the 36" Swampers
No kiddin'......it was a long week, but I was able to stay focused on it and knocked it out.
For the record, It is absolutely my daily driver.....I kinda' resent it when I'm asked to take my wifes Element on a long-haul to town or somethin'.....on account it gets better mileage or some other unverified claim.
It drove pretty damn good when I first got it, but I'm sure not makin' it up when I say it drives like a new truck......And ya always enjoy the one finger steering.............and it's kinda comforting to know that if you stab the brakes at 60 mph on dry pavement....she honestly does stand on her nose.`

Re: How Many Daily Drivers On Here?

Between my motorcycle and my truck. Truck usually gets the nod for coming home on the week ends from El Centro to El Cajon, but I'd say I drive the truck about as much as I ride the bike. So it gets atleast 200 miles a week.

Re: How Many Daily Drivers On Here?

Ours was more or less my daily driver for 17 years covering about 130,000 miles. Now that I'm retired I still drive it most of the time, but it's only traveled about 100 miles a month for the last two years since I don't really go anywhere.

Re: How Many Daily Drivers On Here?

I love driving this truck, so it is my daily driver (40 mi/day).
With the LS motor and good gearing it is fast and economical.

I use my Vette as a bad weather car since it is easier to wash.

Here it is at work last week.

Re: How Many Daily Drivers On Here?

Its good to see that so many people are using their trucks instead of just keepin them in the garage and waiting for nice weather to take a drive. The reason i asked was that my son is about to turn 16 and get his license and i was debating on giving him my 89 K1500 to drive and I'd just start driving my 62, or, buy him another car/truck, keep my '89 as my driver, and leave the '62 as a fair weather/occasional driver. Don't get me wrong, I drive my 62 pretty much every day, (beer store, wal-mart, etc), but I need to spend a few bucks on it to get it to the point where it would be a dependable daily driver. Besides, my employer gives me a service truck to work out of that I drive back and forth every day to work, and the wife has a new Honda so its not like the 62 would be the only thing I had to depend on. I think I'll get the 62 in shape to be my main ride and let the kid have the 89.

Re: How Many Daily Drivers On Here?

I used mine for a daily driver for 10 years. My first ride when I turned 16. Bought another driver so I could rebuild it. Still drive it all the time but much more fun now. I still use it to pull my boat and trailer when I need to haul something. What I would have given for nice paint and a small block in high school!
