auxiliary / accessory fan????
I have an 89 k30 crewcab with 454. It has the auxiliary / accessory fan in front of the radiator (between grill and radiator). My question is, are these operated off accessories being on (like AC) or temperature controlled. It kicks on for 30-50 seconds when I first start the truck, but I don't know if its on when I am driving the truck.
My truck is running warm under load (230 degrees) and I am trying to figure out if it should come on at a certain temperature and how to test it??? Thanks, Greg

Re: auxiliary / accessory fan????
My '86 C20 Burb with 454 also has that electric fan. I don't know much about it's operation because (A) my temp gauge seems to read a little high, and (B) my AC system is inop.
But I do know that it kicked on once earlier this year when I was driving around in Orlando traffic. The gauge was reading like 245*-250*, but I suspect actual temp was 220* tops. I also know that on a cold start, the clutch fan is pulling enough air that it causes the blades of the electric fan to spin, making it look like it's turned on.

Re: auxiliary / accessory fan????
Can you snap a picture of the setup? I've never seen one installed. Does anyone know the width available between the grill and condenser? Distance between the radiator and condenser?

Re: auxiliary / accessory fan????
Radiator looks good. Fins are straight and I can see thru them. The radiator is supposed to be about 6-8 years old. I have been wanting to put an infrared light on it to see if its hot in different places.
I thought that my gauge might be off, but I didn't know how to check it without buying another gauge. I am open to inexpensive ways to check my temp gauge.
