How Much Would You Pay For Nice Doors?

I have the opportunity to buy some straight doors for my 66 LWB Stepside. From talking to the seller, the nice set is exceptionally nice and needs nothing.

From Seller:
"I have 2 sets and there both in awesome shape and complete I'm asking $400 for one set and $300 for the other cause one window is gone. Trust me there well worth the money. Tiny bit of surface rust if any and strait."

What would you pay for these? I need doors for sure, but not in a huge hurry. Should I wait, or should I pounce and hold onto these until I am ready?

Grab them and sit on them. If you pass these up then you will kick yourself later.

Re: How Much Would You Pay For Nice Doors?

Thanks guys! That really helped me to know that. My doors are pretty worked over. I just called the guy and locked them up. He's also getting me 2 inner front fenders and a radiator support. These are all parts that I will need soon enough.

Great!! Anytime you find good original parts that you will need grab them. They go so fast that they are sure to be gone next time you check or need them.

Doors and hoods are the two hardest items to find in decent condition. Bargains pop up now and then, but almost never when you need them. I think you did well grabbing them at that price.

Ok, here's a new development. I got additional pics of these. The doors appear a little less awesome than I thought originally.

Here is the original pic that I saw:

Re: How Much Would You Pay For Nice Doors?

And here are some close up pics that I just received. Let me know what you think. $400 for the doors. Also, the handles are not pictured, but they are included.

I see at least one long dent in the lower right door and the rust on the bottom has me concerned, though the seller has confirmed and re-confirmed that this is surface rust only and that some sand paper will take it right off.

Re: How Much Would You Pay For Nice Doors?

surface rust usually indicates to me where paint has been worn off by abrasion or sun/wind and rust has skimmed the bare metal surface. that appears to be bubbling, indicating rot from inside. You need him to take a picture with the door bottoms in the sun and not shadow to be sure, could be the shadow just making it look bad.

although my doors didnt have as much rust showing as those doors and I wouldnt describe them as anything but rusty. see the door bottoms at the bottom of the pile.

i agree with joedoh...IMO, i wouldnt pay more than 250 for those doors...that rust on the bottom definitely looks pre-rot, if it hasnt already completely weakened or eaten through the metal...and shoot, if he INSISTS that its only surface rust that can be taken off with a light sanding...then ask him to give it a light sanding and prove that its not rotting through...

i agree, the rust is bubbling under the paint which is rust through, the bottoms are hard to tell in the pictures but they don't look much better, looking at the upper frames it looks like those doors have had their fair share of rust.i sold a pair of 62's to jon (jonzcustomshop) that actually were rust free in and out and i gave him a good deal because we've been friends for a long time but if they looked like yours i would have just given them to him.

good luck.

Re: How Much Would You Pay For Nice Doors?

The dents arent any big deal...you can fix that fairly easy but the "surface rust if any" that he is trying to sell you is rust through. That metal is going to be way thin in those areas and as soon as you try to weld them up your going to blow through. In my opinion he is asking a premium price for non premium parts. The doors are probably worth $50-$100 bucks a piece max.
If your not in a big hurry I would pass on these. If you want to spend some money (about 800 bucks) the goodmark doors really do fit like originals. They are super nice!

Re: How Much Would You Pay For Nice Doors?

Sorry for the late reply, I just got back from a camping trip. I passed on the doors because of the information that I gained here. I was pretty excited when I heard the description via email, but after the pics, it worried me. Thanks to everyone for the great advice. You kept me from a mistake!

Re: How Much Would You Pay For Nice Doors?

Those doors and the truck they came from , was in Washington ( Snohomish ) a few weeks ago , he was parting it out .. Then it was purchased and moved to I believe Hillsboro ... The doors weren't worth the money and had problems ... Good thing you passed ...

Nice snag, farmer. I saw pics of the inner fender and they looked nice, but it was too far to travel for fenders alone. I do need some though...

I have a grand in mine, completely rust free doors.......I guess it's what someone is willing to pay for real deal doors.....You could easily spend that or more having new inner and outer panels put on them at a shop.

I've been thinking about this some.
And I'd have to agree about $50 maximum for each door.

$50 Core door + $110 Outer Skin + $40 inside door bottom = $200 for a Rust free perfect door.

A used door is still going to need to be stripped.
Just put a new skin on it and know exactly what you have.
