455 Oldsmobile
Not like my ADD shop doesn't have enough going. I'm in the middle of a engine build for my Cutlass. Just got the heads back tonight. Time to start a thread!

Re: 455 Oldsmobile
I've got a 455 Olds in my 80 Trans Am so will be interesting watching this thread. My motor appears to be very tired. What all are you doing to yours and what numbers are you expecting?

Re: 455 Oldsmobile
Well I'll start with the heads they are C's which had hardened exhaust seats
The way I got them. I had larger 2.07 SS intakes installed and stock exhaust valves. Back cut valves and some mild porting. Smoothed the EGR bumps and tear dropped the valve guide bosses. Running a Engle cam JM 20-22 that has .496/.512 lift. 266/274 adv. duration 226/230 @.050 on 110* lobe center Had the machine shop balance it, install ARP main studs. Already had ARP rod bolts when I got it. Still need to degree cam. Get a fastener kit, gaskets, and figure out my oil pan. Mod one myself or find some cash for a deep sump moroso/milodon ? Might add an accusump for extra protection. Similar builds have seen about 380HP 500+ lf lbs. with W/Z manifolds. I'm on the fence about running headers. (getting old)

Re: 455 Oldsmobile
Sounds great - really like those valve covers. Looks like enough trunk to fit a SmartCar - I like it!

Re: 455 Oldsmobile
Sorry thought I put that on there. .030 SP 2278P forged not the best out there but not a high rpm screamer so they will do fine. And they came with the car!

Re: 455 Oldsmobile
I was just curious because I recently rebuilt my 455 very similar to what you are doing, but mine is stock dish pistons and stock cam still (.440/.440 Lift).

Re: 455 Oldsmobile
I think he's suggesting that the block should be gold not silver.

gold and bronze not silver that I know of but who cares mine is gray. All the good (matching) Olds paint are special order and cost too much. I had it boiled down to red or blue until I saw the can of cast iron gray. That I just had to have. I'm happy with it.

Re: 455 Oldsmobile
I like it gold with oem valve covers, yours looks great. I did not think the polished valve covers would look as good with gold.

Re: 455 Oldsmobile
Thanks. I agree with you on the polished valve covers. I don't know how close my gold is to the original Olds gold paint because I just used the only gold engine paint I could find. I originally wanted to use taller valve covers so I could use roller rockers, but I went with stock valve covers and stock rocker arms for now since I left the stock cam in it.

Re: 455 Oldsmobile
Yes I am refering to the Gold Rocket engines. Not dissing your build, Gold is the "norm" for under '74 Olds engines like Orange is for Chevy. Mine is still factory gold, but it is a lowly 350.

Re: 455 Oldsmobile
I believe from what I read about Olds engine colors a while back that 455's of any year were never painted gold. I think it was only the 350's.

Could be. The only factory 455's I have seen were from post 75 when they all went blue. I did see a rebuilt 455 in a 442, it was gold but far from factory, so it really doesn't count.

Re: 455 Oldsmobile
That is going to be one cool Olds. And from the engine specs you provided, it'll haul butt, too!
I think those 'Vette wheels look pretty classy on there. You don't see those too often.
