5 speed Manual transmission
Hello all, I'm looking to put in a 5 speed manual into my '70 and was looking for something a bit stronger than the T5 from an S10.
What i would really like is what I had in my '94 Z-71, with the 3.73 gears, it had great range in first gear, and cruised well in 5th. Anyone know what model transmission that is, or have any other suggestions? Thanks! Shawn |

Thanks for the response, and I did a little research... It looks like the NV4500 aka MT8 and MW3 was used in the 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. The one I has was in a 1/2 ton K1500 and didn't have the super low 'granny' first gear.
Does that sound right? |

Ok, looks like I had the NV3500 which was the medium duty 5 speed used in a whole bunch of things.
Anyone swap in a NV3500 and can show where the shifter ends up in the cab? Thanks! |

If you want to put a T-56 behind an old school sbc you'll need a trans from an LT-1 car. The GTO was an LS1 and has a different bell housing and clutch setup. You might look into using the GTO shifter, however, because it moves the shifter position forward a few inches vs. the original LT-1 shifter. You will also need a hydraulic clutch assembly with a push type slave. The stock slave can be modified to fit an aftermarket master, the master from the f-body has an angled mounting plate on it due to the floor boards and would be hard to mount in our trucks. I put a T-56 into my 96 Impala SS, so if you do go that route shoot me a PM and I can send you some pics and info of what is involved with a T-56 swap. I've even been looking into putting one into my 96 ext cab Chevy when the 4L60E takes a crap on me. I have no info about the NV3500 though. |

If you want something "a bit stronger" then an S-10 T-5 you can use a Camero T-5 & put a S-10 tail houseing on it or use bucket seats. It is the World Class model & is a little stouter then the NWC from the S-10. I have run T-5s behind 350 V-8s. As long sas you don't hot-rod it it will hold up.

Looks like some good info for me too. I have an LT-1 and a 6 speed I pulled from a Z-28 a while back, I have been thinking about dropping it in a 67-72 at some point.

Pretty sure most of these swaps require a different clutch setup than is on our trucks, something to keep in mind.

Thanks for all the replies guys... but after even more research, I've found that I've been chasing my tail because this transmission will be going behind an LS 5.3... so the older ones won't work. I'll have to use a newer car trans now I suppose.

I had 3.73's in my impala (4600 pounds with me in it) and 6th gear was useless at anything under 85. I've not got 4.56's in it and they are a little too steep. I can take off from a dead stop in 5th gear with my built stroker in front of the trans. |

They put a 5 speed behind the The 4.8s all the way up to 07 classic body style. Also, the bolt patern is the same as a 350 so, you could still use the NV3500 if you wanted. As long as you get the clutch stuff set up correct. I plan on using a 5 speed behind my 5.3 as well. I know the trannies they put behind the 4.8s hold up to quite a bit of power. Don't know the part number though.

I have had real good luck with a Tremac TKO-600, you should only have to change the clutch disc to a fine spline and move the rear crossmember.
It will hold up to 600HP and has a real good 1st and even a better 5th !! Start saving your lunch money!!!
