i dont really like having to flip around to fill up and im not able to go to far with the lil 12 gals i got. i saw the tanks in lmc that fit in the same stock location and there bigger they come in a 20 gallon. and you can put it on either sides or both. anyone done this? i also saw in brothers that they have a rear mount gas tank. or i was thinking i could hunt down like an 82 i believe because some of them had a single larger rear mount tank. but the later years did not. any in put guys and gals?

All the trucks i've owned have had the larger tanks, However I've done rear tank installs by changing rear cross members and installing additional fill necks. Good luck, Ron

Well you could mount a burb tank where the spare tire mount is. then you have a 40 gallon tank at the rear. if you have it slightly higher than the saddle you can gravity feed the side saddle tank removing the need for a tank switch. also cit a hole in the bumper behind the licence plate and mount the filler neck there while using a caprice spring mount for the licence plate so it would be a hidden filler the could be filled at the same time as the other tank.

Short beds can only fit a 16 gallon tank (factory) on either side. Long beds can fit either the 16 or 20 gallon tanks on either side. Some of the step sides (what years I don't remember) came with a rear mounted tank (capacity unknown to me)
You could alway put in a blazer/ suburban 30 gallon tank behind the rear axle. Do a search for it. Plenty of people on here have done so and done write ups of their progress.

thanks i didnt even think about a blazer or a burb tank. i sure i wouldve sometime. that replacement side mount 20 tank was cool but a 40 just in the rear would be nicer

Its a pretty good option as long as your truck is at stock height. If your going to lower ir any, take in to consideration the larger rear tank does hang down.

How about something like this???
It's roughly 40 gallons, fully baffled internally & sits very nicely between the frame rails under the bed!!! It's even set-up to hold a stock GM sending unit/pump assembly for my LY6 6.0L engine!
Keven fabricated it from scratch - it's fully sealed inside & will be getting a coating Hot Rod black shortly to match a lot of other stuff. BTW - they relocated my filler using a door assembly off of a Suburban.

sharp looking tank and they aren't hard to make. did you coat the inside for rust prevention or is it galvanized?

It was coated by a local radiator shop with a product that WFO uses regularly for the fuel tanks they build, so should hold up pretty well if history is any indicator!

I'm hoping that it will - just gonna cringe every time I have to fill it up..... Even at just $3.50 a gallon that's like $125-140.00 each time & it'll probably only get around 17-19MPG unless I baby the crap out of it... Oh well - that's why I will have a little ricer car to putt around in for the commuting!

yeah but the way i see it when my tank is full i can go over 450 miles without refilling. which isn't to bad when i go no more than ten miles a day.

The license plate filler would be lower than the top of the tank so you would have a hell of a time trying get gas in there.....

Was never my intention - just an option I wanted to share with others. We had looked at using a Blazer tank at first, but I just didn't care for the look or the limited fuel capacity.
