14 bolt Disc Conversion Parts List?
I have searched this several times with little help found so far. I want to convert my 14 bolt FF 86 & older axle to discs. I have read that this style has drums that are mounted behind the hubs. I have not double checked yet, but I have no reason to think it is any different as it is from an 80 model pickup. My question is this, I know I need rotors from a 3/4 ton 44 for the 8 lug pattern, calipers from same vehicle or eldarado calipers, mounting brakets and flex lines, but do I need new wheel studs? What I have read says you press the new studs through the rotors into the hubs, but will the thickness of the rotor flange make them too short? Also, are the wheel studs flush mounted in recesses behind the hubs, I ask because every picture I have found I can not see any type of stud flange or head on the back side of the hubs. Just want to double check I have my mental picture correct as I want to start pieceing together parts. One final question, since the Dana 44 knuckles are the same on the 1/2 ton and 3/4 ton versions, does that mean I can use 1/2 ton calipers? I am assuming they are smaller diameter rotors but I have seen a ton of different size rotors for 1/2 ton stuff. Thanks in advance.

Yes, studs are different. You can still "press" them in or tighten them on. Use a breaker bar for leverage. Calipers will be the same for 1/2 and 3/4 tons.

Yes you will need new studs with a smaller head on them here is some part numbers...I recommend the longer ones no matter what wheel you run.
Dorman Part #: DOR-610-228 (shorter, for use with steel wheels) Dorman Part #: DOR-610-301 (longer, for use with aluminum wheels that have a thicker center)

Re: 14 bolt Disc Conversion Parts List?
Now I really feel stupid, I made it to the Pirate 4x4 page and even read the entire 14 bolt service manual from the CUCV versions. I missed the fact that the build process was right under the link I read... Thank you guys for firming up my build list and narrowing the confusion. You guys absolutely sure the 1/2ton and 3/4 ton calipers are the same? Thanks again

Re: 14 bolt Disc Conversion Parts List?
Yes unless it is a dana 60
Half ton and 3/4 ton are basically the same axle except for the hubs go from 6 to 8 lugs.

Re: 14 bolt Disc Conversion Parts List?
I have done this conversion on 6 trucks now and have never bought new wheel studs. The factory ones will work.

Re: 14 bolt Disc Conversion Parts List?
When I change a rear end to disk I replace them since they are so cheap and your in there anyways. Cheap insurance.

Re: 14 bolt Disc Conversion Parts List?
You don't "have" to, but the problem some have is that the studs end up being too short--they sit flush when the lug nut is tightened.
