Rattle hunt
I've got a rattle in my '77 dually, and I believe it might be the front coils rattling in the control arms. I can't see any broken coils. The question I have is, are there supposed to be isolator's between the coils and and control arms? If there are, mine are worn away.

Re: Rattle hunt
No isolators.
I had an old crew cab truck that had a rattle up front. I finally found a bad front shock,... that was making the noise. The outside "can" that covered the shock tube,... had a broken weld.

Re: Rattle hunt
I'll have to keep searching. The rest of the front end is tight, new shocks that I replaced as well as sway bar bushings. Maybe I could zip tie one of my kids up under the truck to listen for it while I drive around. Mother may not be happy with that, though.

Re: Rattle hunt
Not that this will help but years ago in the mid 60's my dad had a Ford that had a clunk in the rear and it took months to find. They finally got to the point that they knew it was in the quarter panel area in the trunk and cut a hole in the inside panel. They found a coke bottle hanging on a string with a note in it that said "Glad you finally found it. That noise was driving me crazy." On the same car they found a screw driver in the trans pan on the first oil & filter change.
Odd hard to find noises always remind me of that bottle. More to the point on my 72 I had the bumper bolts on the right side get a little loose and caused a rattle. |
