Chevrolet Silverado RUSSIA need help
Hi folks!
Have a great dilemma about buying a 1983 Chevy Silverado. 6.2 diesel, 2wd as I understood. Always dreamed about real american pick-up, and now have a chance to buy it, but really afraid a little)) I live in Russia, and we don't have here a lot of such cars. Same situation with any car parts and specialists or even manuals.. So, I show you some pics, and will wait for you comments. May be you can give me some wise advices))) Thanx in advance... |

Re: Chevrolet Silverado RUSSIA need help
Trust me, American pickups are built like tanks, especially the older models like the one you posted. As good as these trucks are, I think it would a problem for you living in Russia to get one in such poor condition. Don't get me wrong, you will never find an older vehicle without rust and scratches, but that one is just a bit too rusty. If you found it here in America and lived in America, that would not be such a problem because you would be able to replace the parts with the most rust, especially if they start to fall apart. My advice is to find a Chevy pickup in better condition.
Otherwise, you wont be able to keep it for long. Most of us here know that we will have to replace parts for our old trucks every once in awhile. It's hard enough for us here in America to find those parts and I bet it's even harder in Russia. If you don't mind buying import parts for that truck and most likely paying more to fix it than what you will buy it for, by all means, buy it! By the way, how is the motor? That's the most important part. |

Re: Chevrolet Silverado RUSSIA need help
Maga, thank for you answer!
The motor and common technical condition is perfect (for today) - it was always "on it's weels" and I really worry about rusty frame (bed? don't know right word). I don't realy know if it's will be possible to renew it here... In fact, it's no problem to buy all nessesery from ebay, but the price for shipping is scaring... By the way, seller wants to get 5000$ for this car... It's almost an american price, isn't it? |

Re: Chevrolet Silverado RUSSIA need help
Well over here in America, you could get a Chevy truck as nice as this for that price:
But of course these trucks are more rare in Russia so I guess people over there want more money for them. |

Re: Chevrolet Silverado RUSSIA need help
First off Welcome. I'm impressed that are any old Chevy trucks over there. That truck here would be around $1200-1500. I'm not too fond of the old diesels. It looks weird on the leaf springs, there is a bunch of them and they look bent (may be the pic). I'm going to guess and say you could have one shipped from the US for $4-5000. My point is you would be far better off finding a decent one here and having it shipped to you. Maybe some folks here could help find one for you.

Re: Chevrolet Silverado RUSSIA need help
Hey there, it's maga, I decided to do a name change. *I did contact an admin to let them know* I've seen a handful of nice trucks like mine in the video I posted earlier for cheaper than $5,000usd. I doubt any of them would be willing to sell their trucks over the internet tho. Most owners of good quality older vehicles like to meet the person they are selling their vehicle to. If I ever sell mine, I know I'd like to know who will be driving it.

Re: Chevrolet Silverado RUSSIA need help
Is that $5,000 USD? seems high... I know they're rare there, but I'm trying to think of rare cars in the US and $5k seems high for one that needs total restoration and is rusty. depends on how much you think its worth. how many of these trucks have you even seen before? that will help you decide how much you want it and how rare it is.

Re: Chevrolet Silverado RUSSIA need help
I dont know how much fuel costs in Russia but just thought I would mention the 6.2 Diesel gets incredible mileage and has decent power.
Before getting serious with it check out the motor, its really easy to ruin a 6.2 with starting fluid. Gm made a crap glow plug controller that would fail and alot of times led to starting fluid causing serious damage. Have you seen it run yet? |

Irishman, would you please explain me about possible problems with motor one more time. I'm not very good at technical English, so please talk to me like you are to explain it to 6-years boy (bold 120 kg weight boy with beard)... This car is running now. And my feelings that the technical condition is very nice. But with the little nuance: if you push the acceleration pedal to hard/quick (like for burnout for example or quick start {so hard to find english word}) engine will stop. Looks like it swallow air. The problem isn't looks too serious, but may be it's just beggining... Can't even imagine.. |

Re: Chevrolet Silverado RUSSIA need help
you may wana check the cab mounts to the frame,to see how it is there
follow the body line down the drivers side, it looks to drop some before the bed

I would definitely change these filters out and see if it corrects the problem before buying. It could also be the injector pump as well but start with the easy stuff first.

Re: Chevrolet Silverado RUSSIA need help
Katsure, if I were you I would buy a nice truck from the US and have it imported/shipped to Belarus.

Re: Chevrolet Silverado RUSSIA need help
That's crazy. It's cheaper to move a person across the world than it is to move a truck.
Are the customs/taxes bad on parts too?

Only for the car. And it's depend on engine volume and manufacturing year. For parts it's only 30% of common price tax.

Re: Chevrolet Silverado RUSSIA need help
This thread has sparked my interest...
Katsura, what kind of 1/2 or 3/4 ton trucks do you guys have over there? Post us a picture of what they look like. Do you ever see any Unimogs? For $5000, I would want to find a truck in nicer shape. However you maybe able to haggle the seller down to $4000? So you are from Belarus, do you happen to work at the tractor factory there? It's supposed to be the largest tractor factory in the world.

Re: Chevrolet Silverado RUSSIA need help
Keep in mind that used vehicles don't lose so much value in many other countries like they do here in the U.S. Over here, we have so many cars that we were destroying them under Obamas Cash for Clunkers program. And many of the vehicles destroyed were nice vehicles like the Chevy van Katsura has pictured.
