Top Texture.
Hi, just about to start fixing up the top on my 72. I was just wondering if it were possible to get the top to look smooth instead of the rough texture it already has. im not really wanting to go at it with the sander.

The way I see it, there are two ways to get it smooth, without going at it with a sander.
Hire someone else, to go at it with a sander, or have it blasted.

I'm no paint or body guy, so take this at face value. If I were doing it, I'd shoot it with some high build primer, and work it from there. This way you're removing the primer to smooth it down as apposed to removing the factory 'glass. Or, and I'm not sure either of these would work in a real world, you could put a skim coat of filler over the entire roof and sand it.

I smoothed a top years ago and it was not glass but sort of a spray on texture that I thought came off pretty well. I used an air file with pretty fine grit paper. Some idiot had cut a one foot square vent hole in the center that needed to be glassed in and the texture sanded off a lot better than the fiberglass repair.

IMO sanding the original texture off isn't really that hard, plus you would be able to see any cracks that are hidden that would show up if your are wanting a smooth finish.

With the "texture" sanded off you could then apply some resin and see the 30+ year old (and dry)fiberglass suck it up.
