What should you get when you buy a NOS part

Hi All,

I recently ordered a temperature sending unit from one of the parts vendors. I paid extra to get a "NOS" sending unit since I've been having problems with the napa reproduction unit I have.

I received my order yesterday, and I received an AC Delco sending unit. The part number is still readily available from any AC Delco dealer, and the part seems to have been manufactured recently.

I was under the impression that a NOS part should no longer be manufactured in its original form, not just a part manufactured by AC Delco. I've heard that newly manufactured AC Delco parts are different and won't work accurately with the gauges in our trucks.

Anyway, I spoke to the retailer, and they said that what they sent was a NOS part just because they buy it from GM. Is that true? I'm just trying to clarify for my own knowledge.

NOS=New OLD Stock. Not Old New Stock. The new temp senders don't seem to work with the old gauges. I had to put a resister inline to get mine to read right. I can't remember what size it was though.

Well, I since NOS stands for "new old stock", so I would take that as something that was made a long time ago and never used.

Re: What should you get when you buy a NOS part

In my opinion charging you extra for NOS and sending a current production item is a deceptive transaction. I wouldn’t consider a current replacement part NOS. It’s just a replacement part that fits the application, and may or may not be identical to an original.

New Old Stock means a brand new original old part that has never been installed. This doesn’t necessarily mean it’s in perfect condition. Many NOS parts have shelf wear, damaged boxes, minor dings or scratches, but they remain old original parts that have never been used.

Exactly. I expect a NOS part to come from the original run of 1966 replacement parts from GM that are now discontinued. Even if AC Delco uses the same molds as original, there's no guarantee that everything is the same internally.

Re: What should you get when you buy a NOS part

This is not the case with ALL nos parts, but sometimes part numbers change with time. New part numbers will supersede old ones. When seeking specifically OLD parts, I make sure to find a part with the OLD number. Nothing beats fifty year old brand new parts.

Re: What should you get when you buy a NOS part

They actually told you that? Wow.

new old stock means = new at one time parts in a box that have never been used sitting on a shelf somewhere.

It is supposed to mean the parts you could have bought new in time frame your truck was built.

Even if it's a new part made kinda sorta close to specs, it is at best a reproduction, not NOS.

I think you should bring this up on the Review Board here on the site.

I think the rest of us will want to know about this company, so we are careful about doing business with them.

Re: What should you get when you buy a NOS part

N.O.S. means in the old original cardboard box that's been sitting on the shelf since it was manufactured.

O.E.M. Original Equipment Manufacture

N.O.R.S. New Old Replacement Stock

The terminology makes all the difference and the price is reflected.

Read PARTS DATA 2nd. paragraph
