edelbrock vs quadrajet carb
Edelbrock vs quadrajet carb on off-road 4x4. Any opinions? Anyone noticed a difference in power? I noticed the edelbrock is easy to tune and work on but my experience with the quadrajets so far I'm not real impressed with the edelbrock c600cfm carb . It doesn't seem to accelerate as good as a quadrajet and seems to suck lots of fuel but I haven't tried a quadrajet on this vehicle yet. I've already had the primary air bleeds plug up twice and tonight it flooded for no reason all of the sudden after working fine for a couple months.

For off road, bouncy, off camber, type driving, the edelbrock is the WORST, and the quadrajet is the BEST. As long as the fuel curve is correct, power will be the same. The engine doesn't know what kind of a carb is feeding it.

Q-jet is by far better. I've never had a problem with mine. Back in the days when DirtyLarry still had a carb on his beast he was running an edlebrock with the off-road kit. His truck compared to mine ran completely different when we got up to higher altitudes and odd angles in the mountains. His was always loading up running rich at low speeds and stalling at the wrong time. Mine putted along without any fiddling other than a slight bump in timing to run a little better at the higher altitude, no loading up, coughing or stalling even at odd angles.
Larry might chime in but I know it annoyed him to no end and was a giant deciding factor to switch to running fuel injection in some form.

A fuel pressure regulator is what works best. But,I like Quadrajet carbs the best.

Another vote for a clean well built 750CFM Q-Jet. Edelbrock use to make a Q-jet. I ran the 1901 Edelbrock Q-Jet for 10yrs off and on road.
One cool trick I used to help with the bumpy offroad slosh or splashing of fuel was to add a 3" peice of fuel line to the bowl vent tube at the top of the carb. Basically extending the vent tube another 3" keeps fuel from spitting out into the primarys wile offroad

i swapped out my stock q jet for a edelbrock 650 AVS thunder off road carb and the edelbrock will handle angles better than the q jet no question about it. Also boosted power switching to the edelbrock.
I have no experiance with the standard NON-off road edelbrocks.

I run a quadrajet with the bowl vent extension like Burt4x4.
And a pressure regulator like Special K. And I set the float level a little low. I removed the stock fuel filter and run a inline filter. Adjusted the secondary's to open early. Eliminate the choke. Made a phenolic carb spacer to help insulate from heat. All this ads up to a good runnin carb that can do hill climb's, steep down hills, handle the bumps, and blast down the smooth strait away's in all 3 gears.

How much play in the primary throttle shaft is acceptable? (QJET) Mine has a little but it doesn't seem bad to me. They wouldn't have this problem if people would put the return spring facing forward and not rearward.

I've run them with alot of slop, and they dont run as smooth as the tight ones, but they still run good enough to use. If I had to guess a measurement I'd say less than a 1/16 at the base plate.

.010 = Ten thousands of a inch or one tenths of a inch .001= one thousand's of a inch A few hundreds is .300 , thats alot. I think you mean a few thousands?

Quadrajet! I love them! My most recent one was leaking a little on my 454 so I swapped it out for a edelbrock witch I thought was good but it started leaking around the accelerator pump an ran even worse than the Q jet so I rebuilt the Q jet and it runs like a dream now, its the 800 cfm version too.

I had a '80 Qjet and I just picked up a '68 Qjet. I think it has a little less slop. I'm itchin to rebuild it and throw my performer manifold on. Now it has the edelbr carb with an adapter and cast intake. I think thats why its underpowered is the square to spreadbore adapter.
