Was looking at distributor and was wondering if a guy was change the cap on one would a dist. from a 6 work on a 8, or visa versa? Don't know whether they make the same rotation, is the bottom gear the same or what , just a thought?!

The 6 and 8 cyl HEI's are different. They have a pickup coil inside that tells the dizzy when to fire. The 8 cylinder has 8 points on the pickup coil and the 6 has 6. now possibly it would work if you change pickup coils, but I don't know for sure.

You're better off just getting the correct distributor. Like O'l Buck said, a 6 dizzy has 6 points on the pickup coil, where as an 8 has 8 points.

The distributor shaft length between the 2 are way different. You'd need to know a good shaft stretcher

Thanks for the info. was wondering if someone was going to say anything about the length or teeth on the gear. oh yea, don't know any shaft strechers.
