Too Much Stuff

As the title says I have too much stuff ,car parts from my Chevelle ,my El Camino ,my 55 Bel Air ,81 Trans Am ,my current 72 Chevy truck project ,Die cast cars ,pedal cars ,and then the various junk. How do you guys decide if ,when and what to get rid of ?I lost track of how many sets of wheels I've got laying around for my truck and cars .Im out of room unless my 55 sells soon ,then I can build another building to house more stuff .Just wondering how you decide when to part with stuff and what you part with. Im terrible about keeping spare parts everywhere .I've already given some truck stuff away and some Chevelle parts as well.

I told my wife to either give my parts away or scrap'um when I'm gone, but until then they aren't going anywhere..... I have a bunch too.

Re: Too Much Stuff

Store it if you can afford to. Buy a storage container if you have the room. Prices are down so selling would be my last resort short of scrapping. Document and mark your stuff as you fill it up. Keep your eyes open for wanted ads to move selected items at a good price. The occasional teaser eBay or CL ad can bring paying traffic as well.

Re: Too Much Stuff

For me it is an easy decision to keep all of it since no-one would buy it up here anyway. If you still enjoy having all the stuff just hang on to it.

Re: Too Much Stuff

I decided to start selling off some trucks, parts, and collectibles when my x-wife racked up huge debt,so we refinanced the house, then she left, never paid child support, recession hit making the bottom fall out of construction rendering my 25 year business useless, and realizing I only have so many years to catch back up (once the economy cooperates)...you asked
Before that,I never felt I had too much stuff. I figure it's my life and having enough to last the rest of it is only natural. They stopped making everything I'm into,so you have to get it when you find it. I haven't sold a single thing I didn't want anymore. Prices go up and your stuff just sitting becomes more valuable. I never looked at it as an investment. But,I will say selling off what I have has sure come in handy to supplement my income. I don't know how I would have survived without it.
On another note. My '67 GMC shortbed project is being built with all spare parts I had gathered for my various trucks. I ended up with all good OEM rustfree sheet metal from Grille to tailgate. I may be broke but I have a rustfree cab,SWB Fleetside '67 bedsides/wood floor supports/front panel/tailgate/fenders/doors/hood,and buddy buckets,tach/air dash,4spd tilt,M22,large journal 327,3.42 posi rear,SWB frame w/rebuilt steering/suspension/brakes & 4/6 drop,5-lug 8" steelies,a variety of dog dish caps, bumpers, grille, steering wheels,am/fm,and on because I had bought up all that stuff when times were better. Too much stuff?...Nah!

That why I like shipping containers. Been there, done that. Of course I still need to get some shelves in mine.

Thats when you need to step back and regroup. As said if you can afford a shed, container etc then thats the way to go. Check into the pay by month storage sheds if you cant do one upfront. Even mini storage is an option here, most are reasonable.

Go through bag, tag and organize your stuff as you put it up. (easier said then done lol) think of it like a vendor.. if you know what you have it makes life easier.

After you get that done, then step back again and look.. decide if there is anything you dont want and go from there.

If you can not afford to do any of this, then clean up the best you can. Parts can be organized and neat even stored outside etc.. then you know what you have (for the most part lol) and have a clue where to go with it.

I honestly would not sell off much of anything unless there was a need.. for room, money or such.. my x use to hoard parts, and more ended up getting thrown out for being ruined then used. That was a huge issue and huge waste.. especially when you dont bother paying your house payment, but still go to pick n pull.

That was one of the reasons I thinned out. I knew I had an offset alternator bracket and just could not find it. I looked through everything. Finally had a board member local send me one. 2 weeks later I found the stash....all 4 of them! When it gets to that point...ITS TIME!

I hate that. My older son races and is building cars too, he`s slowly taking over his mothers shed. I`m ok with that as long as they stay away from my garage.

Re: Too Much Stuff

I use to be somewhat of a hoarder, but then life hit and I was forced to move a lot. That is one way to kill the habit for sure, because you don't want to move what doesn't mean anything to you.

As for today, where I have my own home and fairly large garage (SoCa standards anyways).
I am very organized, and keep only things related to what I have.
If I pick something up, and it is for a vehicle I don't own it gets gone in one way or another.

I don't do storage units anymore. Though that's where I had to keep my burb and all related garage stuffs, but I rationalized doing that as the burb having a car payment.
I personally would never store anything at a storage unit unless it was very valuable, and had a specific time to be out of there and the unit closed down. Otherwise you are just paying for stuff that will soon out way it's value, when you total up the monthly rental fees of the storage unit and the value of a box of used car/truck parts is it really worth it? In the long term - no.

Re: Too Much Stuff

My wife has plans for me to build a 4 bay garage as soon as I sell my 55 Bel Air to give me a better place to park our finished cars in and then I will have plenty of room as I currently have all 4 finished cars in my shop .But then I will buy more and again have more of too much stuff .Im afraid its a non curable disease but it keeps me busy looking for stuff.

Re: Too Much Stuff

I was on a roll collecting/buying stuff and I was getting spread thin and scatterbrained, .... a Southern member put it simple in a post once, saying something like ... " that's it, start 2 projects and only get them both half done''........... I got rid of a bunch of stuff, ... nothing rare or non replaceable. ......... life is better now. ....what I have I really like and actually use or will use soon enough, ...... I have misslelock on a 70 Judge in a garage that I may end up with someday, and that is about it....... everything that I got sick of tripping over, or worrying about, I could find and replace fairly quickly if I needed it again.

life is good,kent

Here ya go....Marry a real good looking crazy woman and at least half of your stuff will be gone in no time I came home from work on a wed. afternoon and ALL my stuff was gone, didn't even have a washcloth or towel to take a shower to go to work the next day. She must of had an army of crazys to help her. Went and bought a TV and a 12 pack and cut up some rags she missed. That was about 10 years ago...boy, I sure do miss that couch.

Re: Too Much Stuff

I have actually given a few things away lately that made me feel good and will do more later. My wife and I have gotten involved with a local boys home that cares for foster children that are in need of many things .They have one home for the older boys that have graduated high school and are going to college or tech school that have no experience with upkeeping their cars and the foster parents asked me to mentor them one on one to teach them to change their oil and filters and just general maintenance. After the first oil change at my shop I found that they had a place to work on their cars just no tools or supplies so I got my extra floor jack, jack stands ,oil pan and funnels and some basic tools and took them over.I have enjoyed giving them some stuff and spending time with them as much as they seem to enjoy it.

Boy can I relate! See my signature.
I have decided all the cool items that don't go on current projects are up for sale. If its not used as shop art or going on something in the near future.
Time to unload! Funny how easy it is to type that rather than act on it.

In thinking about it, I might have had TMS once!
Ended up taking 76 tires to the round-up and had to get a permit to haul them in.

I haven't got way too much stuff, but every once in a while I get the urge to "clean house". The problem is, I can hold onto a part for years and never need it. One week after I get rid of something I need it.
