renting a trailer

All, Getting ready to go get my truck down South and need to think of the least expensive way to go. I will be towing truck with mine. Uhaul wants 332.00 from Arkansas to Virginia. Anyone know of a less expensive rental company for a trailer? Thanks Wootdog

Whoever you go with, don't tell them how far you are going. Just tell them you need to move some stuff locally. Some places like to add on that milage.

What about a car dolly instead of a trailor?

I agree, run an empty trailer down will be cheaper than a one way. Afriend blew up his 57 Olds in Illinois last summer and found out it was cheaper to buy a used trailer than rent one, and he would have had to go to Michigan to get the nearest unrented Uhaul available. If you plan to do occasional towing, you are really better off to buy a trailer and have it handy when you need it. A couple of trips and it pays for itself. JMHO

If you go local, with U-haul, it doesn't matter where you're goin', they don't care. Just be honest and tell them how long your gonna have the auto transport. In answer to someone else's post, our trucks won't fit on a U-haul tow-dolly(2-wheel). Sometimes you can find a local guy who migt rent one that will fit(?!).

If you can find it, a tow-bar will work for at least a third of the cost. You should disconnect the driveshaft when you tow with this or tow dolly.

How do I know all this? Cause I rent these stupid items.

I'm not sure but I don't think other companies will rent their tow equipment withou renting a truck.

Our trucks will fit on u-haul tow dollies just over lap on the spindle area.
Just have some narrow tires on the front instead of fat ones.
Don't tell them what ya towing or where ya going cause they will not rent it to you if you tell them what you are hauling.I've done this and thankfully a buddy ran a shop where I live with a u-haul.

You can buy a tow bar from Wall Mart for about 100 bucks. Even thought they say only 3500 pounds, I know for a fact they will do more. The tow bar width is a fraction narpwer than our frame rails, so I spread thema little and bolt them directly to the frame instead of drilling the bumper like they say.
I towed my 4000 pound GMC from TX to Oh, about 1400 miles, had a stripped cab in the back, and about 1000 pounds of tools. So that comes out to about 5000 pounds.
Then, i hauled the one ton from eastern PA to Ohio...430 miles...(no idea what that huge sucker weighs).
Had no problems.
Another HUGE advantage to owning a tow bar, it will store in the shed, basement, or even the closet in your dorm room (which ever description fits your life) instead of hogging up a parking spot, and plus next time you need it, you don't need to go get lic plates or insurance on it.

HeavyChevy,

Are you suggesting someone not tell the whole truth!!!??????

There are about 3 different tow dolly designs for U-haul. I don't think there is any way one of our trucks will fit on the 1st design. It is a fixed unit that doesn't pivot. The newer designs pivot and are wider.

U-haul doesn't want our trucks on them because of weight mostly IMHO
