Re: 5.3 an 700r4
Best to use a computer controlled tranny. what year motor? can make a difference but I think all you need is a crank spacer and a flywheel and tune out the tranny in your PCM, like the standard shift PCM's.
I could be missing something here but pretty sure that is it. Also the 700 might not be tough enough if you cam or turbo that 5.3

Re: 5.3 an 700r4
Hadn't planned to really go any bigger than factory. I just don't like the 4l60ebut have had good luck with the 700r4s

Re: 5.3 an 700r4
I understand but I have had to rebuild more electric tranny's than any 700r4s plus I have worked the 700 alot harder an I don't need a computer programmer to hook the 700r4

Are u not running a computer at all? The stock ecm would control the tranny, no special computer needed. Heres my issue with it; the 700r4 relies for its life, on the tv cable. Adjusted wrong and its a big slipping paper weight behind a motor. I'd rather take my chances on a computer, as 1 wrong move with the Tv is the end of your trans.

Re: 5.3 an 700r4
Correct but if trans is not programed right it's no better an it's pretty simple to adjust the tv cable

Re: 5.3 an 700r4
The trans isnt programed at all, the PCM just reads infor like what gear its in, RPM, speed etc, etc.
I have a friend here ( Harnalien) that put a 700 behind a 6.0, and it just wouldnt work even with the TV made easy. it needed a cam relearn and couldnt figure out what gear it was in. it toasted the trans not because of the 6.0 power but because the 700 couldnt communicate with the PCM and the PCM couldnt make any adjustments. I would think you can tune all that out maybe. If it were me, which it isnt, I would build a 4l60e and mate the two, enjoy the ride. Mine works great.

Re: 5.3 an 700r4
@clyde65: The trans can and should be programmed out, but the ECM still requires a VSS signal input...

Re: 5.3 an 700r4
Must have a cable-x converter, that drives the cable, or a custom tailshaft with both outputs. Spendy either way- prolly better off with an aftermarket speedo, unless you're committed to stock...

Re: 5.3 an 700r4
I had a 700r4, it broke the first time I got on it. Now I'm looking at th400's because a 4l80e is out of the budget

Re: 5.3 an 700r4
I'm the guy he's talking about. I had my computer tuned for a manual tranny and everything deleted from the tune. I don't think the problem had anythin to do with the tune or the computer not knowing what the tranny was doing. The main problem (I believe) is that my tranny just wasn't strong enough. It was built by a good shop, but not for what I am putting out now. I believe my engine is putting out at least 440-450lb/ft torque and the tranny couldn't handle it. Like other said, you will need a flexplate and the TV system (or similar).

Re: 5.3 an 700r4
Have a customer with a Jeep Wagoneer with 5.3/700R4 and loves it.
We use these spacers: https://www.herronperformance.com/st...&productId=239 And as for tuning of the PCM, you can use either M6 or A4 tune, just delete out the codes associated with trans functions. U do want the TV cable set up that guys mentioned, that is the life of the 700R4. To use the mechanical speedo with 4L60e use https://www.herronperformance.com/st...&productId=478 I am using it in mine and works good!

Durn the converter for speedo cost as much as my 700r4. But thanks everyone for the info I have some food for thought now time to decide which to do still leaning towards an 700r4 though

Re: 5.3 an 700r4
You could also change to mechanical output on your 4l60 and use a digital converter for the PCM signal. Much cheaper- like $60 from Dakota digital. I agree on using the 700 if you already have it though...

Re: 5.3 an 700r4
csa daddy i am looking at a 5.3 or 4.8 to go infront of a 200-4r the tv issue is about the same as i understand. the best i have come up with is manual tranny tuning ls1 intake and tb out i have found them on ebay for under 200 bucks now with this your wiring will be a little different because of the diffrent style of injectors but with the ls1 intake the bowtie overdrives tv cable will work corectly. this is just what i have understood from my research but any one who has done one would know best.
