removing engine and trans from a 72 k20
Need to remove a locked up 350/350th from a 72k20. Anyone have a pic of the mount between trans and transfer case? So much grease under there I cant see where to scrape for the bolts. Also any tips and will this be harder with locked up engine? Trans needs rebuilt also.
Thanks in advance, Jud

Re: removing engine and trans from a 72 k20
My drive train is from a 74 K10 with a 203/350. I think 205 is similar. In this photo you can see there are 5 bolts from the transmission side of the adaptor thru the adaptor to the transfer case. Obviously you need to have the crossmember, shifter, etc. removed. The transfer needs to pull straight back so it disengages from the adaptor and the shaft clears. I have always removed the transfer first then the transmission because of the weight. The transmission bolts to the engine with 3 bolts per side if I remember right. It needs to pull straight back off of the alignment dowels. Don't forget to unbolt the torque converter first so it comes with the transmission or you get to clean up a lot of fluid. Drain both first to minimize a mess.

Re: removing engine and trans from a 72 k20
Thanks for the info! I can't unbolt the torque converter though since the engine is locked

Looks like you get to wrestle the trans out with the engine.

Re: removing engine and trans from a 72 k20
Any chance I can also leave the t case on, remove crossmembers, mounts, and just drop everything out the bottom? I have a two post lift. I'd like to leave it all together for pressure washing prior to disassembly.

Re: removing engine and trans from a 72 k20
I dropped mine out thru the bottom on my K-30 awhile back using my Gray end lift...I didnt have my front axle in at the time tho. Clearing your front axle is the hard part but with a 2 post lift you should be able to do it. Remove your tires and wheels so you can drop low to the ground..then use a cherry picker to lower the motor and trans the rest of the way..as soon as you clear the firewall start rolling it back to clear your axle..having a good tilt to the rear will help a lot plus remove the distributer and carb before hand will help.

Re: removing engine and trans from a 72 k20
You could just unbolt the transmission from the block, let the converter slip out of the pump, and pull the engine by itself, then drop the trans and x-case out the bottom. I just did the same thing with a locked up engine in my burb last fall. I was rebuilding everything anyway, so i got it all out the fastest/easiest way i could think of.

Re: removing engine and trans from a 72 k20
when you pull it out you can unbolt the converter from the flywheel. When the trans is not in the way you can get to the bolts. I would pull the converter before you pressure wash it.
