powersteering problem with mustang 2 rack
i have a 1950 suburban with a 383 stroker motor. i installed a 1993 serp belt system out of a caprice and used the factory power pump. i put in a mustang 2 front end with a power rack. i installed a borgonsen pressure reducer in the back of the pump.i used the recommended amout of washers to reduce the pressure.my problem is that its really hard to steer. it so hard that its acually steers worse then having manual steering. my level in the pump is good,my new belt is tight, its not making any unusual sounds, i have new lines and its not leaking. does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

Re: powersteering problem with mustang 2 rack
You should not need pressure reducers if the PS pump is not a hydraboost pump. Standard vacuum brake PS pumps are not as high pressure as a hydraboost pump.

Re: powersteering problem with mustang 2 rack
i was told that this style gm power steering pump puts out about 1200 to 1400 psi and a mustang 2 power steering rack can only handle about 700 or 800 psi. otherwise it will blow a seal on the rack or have over sensitve steering.

Re: powersteering problem with mustang 2 rack
that is my understanding also. i have a late 60's power steering pump with the remote reservoir on my big block and a mustang power steering rack. i did what you did and it worked great. i actually put one more shim in than they called for. i would try taking a shim out and see what happens.my steering was very touchy and twitchy and this really improved the driving of my truck.

Re: powersteering problem with mustang 2 rack
I used a valve similar to this one, I took the gm valve out and put another valve in. I picked it up from RB's which have since gone out of business.

I readed if you got them crossed. When you start engine. Rack will make a hard turn.
So don't have arm through steering wheel when you start for first time. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: powersteering problem with mustang 2 rack
You might have the wrong power steering pump for that adapter, I didn't see it until I re read your post. 1993 power steering pumps if I am not mistaken are internally different from let say an early pump 70's pump. You might have to call mullins to clarify but if you cant resolve try using an earlier pump.

Re: powersteering problem with mustang 2 rack
the borgenson 899001 instructions for the pressure reducer washers say use for both type II and self contained power steering pumps. i think the 1993 is a self contained. im thinking it may be the pump, the rack or the lines are reversed. does anyone have any more thoughts or ideas which one it could be?
