Easier find?
Looking to do a 67-68 stepside for my next build. Ive searched eBay, craiglist, racing junk and local sites but cant find what i'm looking for. My question is, do you think it would be easier to go after a 69-72 stepside and swap front clips or find a 67-68 fleet and swap in a stepside bed? I found a silver 68 in Vegas on craigslist a few weeks back but couldn't get the poster to answer me back. I'll take some leads too if anyone has them. Thanks in advance.

Re: Easier find?
That silver one has been there for a while, eBay too. I don't see it listed anymore... There is a white 67 Stepside on CL in vegas but its a long bed.
http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/cto/2683453396.html I think a bed swap is easier then a front clip swap, possibly cheaper too... Depending on your SMOG requirements, that might help determine what year. In Vegas 1967 or older = no SMOG, 1968 or newer = SMOG every year... |

Re: Easier find?
I would think you would be able to find a 67-68 stepside easier than the swap from another year would be.
Stepsides are hard to find though. You will have to expand your search out quite far and be willing to travel a bit to pick it up. |

Re: Easier find?
I know where there is a 67 long step side bed, one owner, all original, 6 cylinder, 3 on the tree and pretty darn rusty. He is asking $400 for it. The cab is mostly workable but the hood and fenders are pretty rusty. I know where there is another long step side bed that can be gotten as parts for this one.

Re: Easier find?
I didn't realize they were that rare until I read this post. I had one fall into my lap while I was looking for parts for my 67 Slant Back. 67 short stepper with all rust free sheet metal, 283, 3 on the tree and enough parts to put it on the road.
If your looking for a small back window along with good fenders without side marker lights then your choices are narrowed up a lot. If your going with a big back window you should be able to piece one together. Here is a couple of pics for ya.....they are out there! Good luck with your search.

Re: Easier find?
My Brother lives in Las Vegas, he has a 71 Dodge Ram truck he couldnt get passed the smog test there.(that requirement is for only 2 counties in NV). Anyway I did some checking for him and found out if you register your old trucks as a classic there is no smog testing. So thats what he did.

Re: Easier find?
Stepsides are making a come back man, I'm tellin ya ! Just something about the chains on the tailgate .. IMO. I love the fleets too, dont get me wrong but mine's a step side. I found mine as an abandoned frame off project in Corbin KY. The guy had replaced every bit of the metal (didn't need a whole lot) just typical stuff, corners, mounts, rockers, etc. The bed is perfect, fenders are rust free for the most part around the wheel lips and I have a 68 clip going on it. Mostly west coast GM sheet metal. I gave $4000 for the truck as a rolling body with a brand new repro 69+ clip on it. I pulled the clip and sold all the new stuff for GM 68 stuff.
They're out there! I pulled a 68 stepper out of the woods in Gatlinburg TN about this time last year. The truck had sat for three years and never moved. The brakes were down on it. I gave $1300 for the truck with a 327 and Muncie 4 speed. Pics below. We made a shop truck out of the 68 from the hills of TN, and my frame off truck is coming right along. I'll keep my eyes open for you. Later.

Re: Easier find?
Thanks, I've been following your build thread and it's one of the reasons i want to go back to a stepper.
Mine was a stepper to begin with and i got this wild hair to get a fleet, so i sold the step bed to tiger here on the board and found a real nice fleet bed, don't get me wrong i also like fleets but there is just something about stepsides.

Re: Easier find?
I love my short Stepper - Never considered anything else. After living in SoCal. for a few years, and seeing all those F*&d '56 F-100's, and there must be thousands, diff. color, diff. wheels, blah, blah, blah,, I new I had to have a stepper.
. WISH IT LOOKED THIS SHINY UP CLOSE - Better a 50 footer

Re: Easier find?
I would worry more about rust and rear window size. That and WB.All else is pretty simple.Keeping the bodywork to a minimum and having the right length frame make it just bolting parts and finish work.

Re: Easier find?
Yeah guys I'm looking for a short stepper and I want the big back glass, should have been more clear, don't care if it has an engine, will be replacing it anyway, don't care if it has marker lights or not, they are getting shaved anyway if so, just want minimal rust on what is included, if anyone sees anything fitting this description let me know

Re: Easier find?
I would say track down a fleet side and see if you can find somone that will swap beds for the step side. I would sawp my step for a fleet any day.

Re: Easier find?
There is red 70 where I live. I looked at it but I thought he wanted to much for it. He still has it and keeps it in the garage. I got lucky and found a '68 and put it my driveway yesterday.

Re: Easier find?
I've got a complete 67 GMC front clip, no rust, couple of dents that is for sale in Northern AZ if that becomes of any help. I will sell just the fenders and hood. Also I'm kinda in the market for a short wide box with wood for my 70, so I might be able to take a bed off your hands if you go that route. Or maybe a trade HMM HMM.

Re: Easier find?
Strange, 67-72 trucks appear on CL around here all the time. There are probably 15 in a half mile radius of me. There are 3 within 500 feet!
Not for sale, but its an indication of how many are out there. There's one 69-72 SWB on my way to the home store that's had the front wheels off for 4-5 years. Maybe down south things are different... |

Re: Easier find?
72lb I might just be being too picky on the condition I'm looking for one in, I see them too, it's just the seller either wants way too much for what he's got, they are already redone or they are in worse shape than what I want, I think I got spoiled( or lucky) on my first purchase so I'm looking for something that will equal that or beat that
