single vs double wall top

I see different posts with people talking about each. Being new to the blazer side of things, what are the differences (good and bad) between the two? What is the easiest way to tell them apart? Any pictures or existing threads would be very helpful for me as well. have a total of 4 tops here and they all look the same to me. All are in need of repair in one way or another.
Thanks for any help with this.

Re: single vs double wall top

If your going to be removing your top some, single wall is the best, way lighter. Its like a topper, there is a lip on the mounting surface and bolts from top down, a double wall is sold on inside and has to be bolted from under the bed rail. The bed rails on blazer are different though, double wall blazer just have holes to put bolts through and single wall blazers have nuts on bottom side of bed rail

Re: single vs double wall top

Single wall have two dome lights on drivers side, double walls have none. I've had both, the single wall I believe would be easyier to repair. The double has a few more places to hold water, contrary to much belief fiberglass will rot. The metal strip inside the double wall has nuts welded to them that can strip out another difficult repair, the hatches are the same and where the hinges bolt are the same. IMO singles are much better, good luck deciding.

Re: single vs double wall top

ok so this is considered a single wall top?

Well it appears I have 3 double wall tops and access to possibly 2 single wall tops (I am actually trying to buy his complete 72 blazer) they all need various stages of work but nothing that can't be fixed.

thanks for the help guys

Richard

P.S. I have had his single wall off years back and if the double wall on mine is any heavier then thats where it will stay. LOL

Re: single vs double wall top

Critter,
Thanks for the links. I have been spending the last several weeks just trying to absorb all of the great info here and I had yet to find anything on this topic. I have had very mixed luck with the search function but even with that pitfall I would not trade this site for anything.

Richard

Re: single vs double wall top

Just know that swapping from a single to double (or vise versa) isn't a bolt in deal...I don't know exactly what's entailed, but the bed rail holes don't line up for one.

Re: single vs double wall top

Keep in mind that many (maybe all???) 72s have BOTH holes already in the bed rails. Mine is this way, I can use either top with no drilling.

I can confirm that not all 72's have both sets of holes drilled. I have a double wall with only 1 set of holes on my 72.

Well...I guess I should have said "some" 72s have both holes. As usual I stand corrected. Maybe it was dependent on what plant it was built at.

Re: single vs double wall top

I removed a double wall and installed a single wall that needed fiberglas repair where it was broken through under one of the windows. It also had a one foot square hole in the middle where some chucklehead had cut in a nice camper roof vent. I wanted to keep it but it didn't crank up and down very well. just kidding. I used my double wall back gate and it bolted right up.
The reason for my switch is every double wall top I have seen has nice dips on top for rain water to puddle in. It didn't look very good at eye level on the dropped Blazer. Single wall smoothed right up and looks a lot better.

Re: single vs double wall top

Ditto on mcampbell's comment...my double wall is virtually perfect other than the big dips on the top...The worst part is I've been watching CL for at least 6 months and when one pops up the seller wants 500+ for it...WITHOUT a hatch or glass...I guess that's why I still see it pop up 6 months later...

Re: single vs double wall top

I think they all came with the holes for the double wall tops and if the put a single wall top on it they had to put the holes in for it because they werent in it.

Re: single vs double wall top

Mine had caged nuts for single wall and holes for double wall AND major roof droop in the factory single wall top. I've since welded up the double wall top holes, and, no matter which top you have it's a load in the pants to remove/install either one.

I agree Lifting a heavy roof off and on is just the price we have to pay in order to drive something so cool!
