Welp, we bought it!

Here folks is a '65 GMC Suburban! 305 BB V6, 3 speed 4wd. The odometer reads 72xxx miles.

An old high school classmate of mine had this truck for the last 10 years or so. I happened to run across it on facebook. The fellow and I had graduated together, but didn't really know each other. Anyway, I first became aware of this Beast in September. Of 2010. At that time he did not want to part with the truck. I contacted him again in August of this year, and we made the deal on the 26th (Merry Christmas!!).

I've been threatening the family that I'd buy this, and they were all praying that I wouldn't. We have three daughters, the oldest of which will be driving in a year and a half. In a quest to find a safe, slow, easy-to-repair vehicle these old trucks kept coming to mind. The wife finally agreed that it may be fun, and would at least be a novelty.

Haven't done much yet but cut the winch mount off the front. I love the V6, and my wife loves the column shift 3 speed. I think she has more fun in the truck than I do. The girls are not too thrilled, but at least one sees potential in the ol' girl.

We have plans for a minor restoration with most focus on making it safer and 'cuter'

I will have tons of questions as we work through and upgrade the different systems. You guys have a tremendous amount of skill, knowledge, and experience. Hope I can make the truck a little better than it is.

My daughter is 2 and I've planned at least 5 cars for her... It'll b really fun for y'all to build this together. Even if u end up buying her a Civic to drive around, she will always remember working on it w u.

Re: Welp, we bought it!

Looks good. The best thing I did was put my daughter in a big 4x4 chevy thruck when she was 16. She came out of a (not her fault) accident safely. The other car was totaled but her truck had minor damage.

Nice find!

My daughter doesn't mind dad's "ugly truck' because she knows when it's all done, it will be nice. When it's done

Re: Welp, we bought it!

IMO you can't go wrong with a Suburban for a family vehicle. We had 3 memorable trips in our '66 with the kids.

That is great and, whether the girls know it or not, they will come to appreciate it later in life. Nice score!

Re: Welp, we bought it!

I appreciate the encouraging words...some of the girls are still less than excited, but I think the idea is growing on them!
Here are a few more pics;

Passenger floorboard is in horrible shape;

The drip rail is pretty rough too;

These old decals are neato...

Glad to have the owners manual!
