Tire Help

Is there a way to make the flat tire hold air? It only leaks air out the rim. I'm not trying to make the tire for use on the road just want it to hold air so I can work on it without the truck being so low to the ground. Again not going to use these tires to drive just want them on it while it gets worked on. Also is there a way to clean off the rust on the rims without scratching them? Thanks for all the help you can give.

Re: Tire Help

Redneck advice...... If it's off the bead clean the bead with a sand disk or wire wheel depending on how bad it is. Clean that up and smear some grease around the bead. Put the air to it and seat. Do the soapy water test and if it's bubbling smack that spot with a hammer. This is assumming you don't care about the rims.

I like the resealing the bead idea with grease but plan on keeping rims so then what?

Re: Tire Help

Take it to a tire shop and get them to re-seat it. If it's bad, they may have a take off for you cheap. That's the easiest way imo.

I'm kinda like duct tape- no real purpose, but handy to have around.

Re: Tire Help

Agree with all the aforementioned techniques, and can add a couple:

a) If it's a bead leak, you can also try RTV sealer (rather than grease)

b) This is not supposed to work but I've also had some success with "fix a flat" for fixing a bead leak. (Theoretically centrifugal force should cause the the sealer to migrate to the inside of the tread portion of the tire, but I've had this work for bead leaks).

Regarding rust removal - good ole' fashioned elbow grease with sandpaper might be best. You can also try some chemical solutions ("naval jelly", rust removers or muriatic acid) depending on how desperate you are.

Will sandpaper hurt or scratch the finish on the rims?

Looking back at your picture - are they painted or chrome? I assumed they were painted rallys.

Painted - scuff 'em up and repaint.

Chrome - sandpaper might scratch, but I've heard some guys do good work with steel wool and polish.

Re: Tire Help

Alot of the surface rust can be removed with chrome polish.

Sometimes just jacking up the vehicle to get the weight off the tire will allow it to reseat if you have enough air pressure.
Another trick is to wrap a ratchet strap around the circumference of the tire in the middle of the tread and tighten the strap to force the bead out towards the rim. As soon as it stars sealing release the strap. You don't want to over stress the strap. And of course this is easier with the wheel of but can work with the truck jacked up so you can get tge strap around the tire. And don't forget safety! Never work around/under a vehicle without using sturdy jack stands that are rated to hold the vehicle.

Good luck.

I already tried you first suggestion but that didn't work. My neighbor might be able to get me a set of decent tires to hold it for now. But thanks for all the help.
