Timing issue

Hello all.

I have been fighting with my 89 burb 5.7 and i have it narrowed down to timing. The truck is slow and sluggish. the more gas i give the worse it is.

I set the timing at zero unplugged, plugged it it advanced to 8-10. revved it advances more (good) but it has a slight drop before it advances. SO,,,
I put the truck in gear, brake set, and put a load on the motor and it retards. it will go all the way to 10+ ATDC. It is acting like an old dist. hooked to the wrong vacuum.

The more gas i give it the more it retards, so driving in the mountains is impossible. As long as i keep my foot out of the gas i can creep along.

It does run smooth as silk as long as i do not try start too fast i can get up to speed but i have to accelerate slow off the start.

Any help would be great.
