Keep the heat loose the A/C?

So my A/C in my 74' doesn't work. I want to remove the compressor and all the hoses and stuff since I don't plan on repairing it.

How much of the A/C box can I remove and related duct work can I remove and still retain a functioning heating system. The huge box in the engine bay looks ugly and I want it out!

Also id like to replace the A/C controls in the cab with a Heater only control.

Is there somebody like Vintage air who sells an Heater only kit?

That big aluminum tank and the black box on the wall is what I want to remove.

But I still want a heater.

Re: Keep the heat loose the A/C?

You can remove it all, and weld up a plate from a non AC truck on the firewall. This way you can just install the set up from a non AC truck. If you want to do that much work. I have seen pics on here of guys that have done it. I don`t have a pic, but on my K5, they took out the AC evap and everything fwd of it. This basically left the black box on the truck but empty, heat works. I have no idea why they did it. My plan is to swap over to a heater only set up from a donor truck.

Re: Keep the heat loose the A/C?

I just asked this same question for my 82 K5 on a Blazer forum earlier today. I'm very intrerested in seeing pics with it all rtemoved and what all needed to be done. I'll never hook up the air on it and I'd love to clean up the engine bay by removing all the air parts. All I currently have is the aluminum tank and the big black box connecting it to the firewall. I need to keep my heat to since I live in Wisconsin. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Keep the heat loose the A/C?

I've removed most of the "junky" extras on the 87&88 pretty much the same stuff
once i knew it was empty just removed what i could...
if you want heat out of that vent by the door
put the temp to heat and then put the AC setting on max....will heat the truck up quicker
when the windows fog up, go back to defrost
