Who has side exhaust?

I'm thinking of re-doing my exhaust, and having my exhaust come out in front of the rear tires.

Right now I have mid-length headers, with an x-pipe and 2 Pypes Violator mufflers......and I have it dumping over the rear axles.

Can I keep the x-pipe, or do I need to run just straight pipes, and a smaller muffler to be able to do this?

I have looked at maybe cherry bomb glasspacks or something along that style to try and make it fit.

So any help, what you run now, what you have run would be great!
And pics of course.....

Thanks

Chad

Re: Who has side exhaust?

My 63 has cherry bombs and dumps out in front of the tires. I don't have an x pipe, but I think it would fit fine. It dumps out quick enough that out may not matter. When I go through a drive through I have to shut it down because all they hear is the exhaust.

Re: Who has side exhaust?

i guess it depends on what you do with the truck also. I have had trucks that dumped in front of the tires and ya it sounded cool and was plenty loud i wouldnt do it on a daily driver again. if it was just a weekend cruiser then ya. as far as mufflers go keeping the x pipe might limit you on what you can use in a big way especially on a short box depending on how far tucked under the truck you want them. i would go straight pipe myself maybe put an H in it somewhere and go with it.

Re: Who has side exhaust?

I run 2.5" striaght to 2.5x18" magnaflow resonators (not mufflers), then right out the step.
Its loud, it does drone on the highway, and the position of the tips blows noise and hot air RIGHT into the window of most passenger cars. Perfect.

I plan on using a rectangle exit but do not have them made at this point. I think Borla or mega flow has a few system that you could get some ideas from

Look into the Gen 4 Camaro tips. They are the shape your looking for.

Re: Who has side exhaust?

Are your mufflers in between or on the outside of your frame rails and if they are in between how do you get around your truck arms in the rear? I have a 62 and it seems like the only way for me to run my exhaust in front of the tire is to put the mufflers under the doors. But I am worried that that will cause two much noise inside the cab.

Re: Who has side exhaust?

I'm planning for 3" side exit exhaust for my '66. Will be running it through the crossmember and frame for more ground clearance. I won't have room for over-the-axle pipes with the frame bracing that will eventually be welded in.

Re: Who has side exhaust?

Thanks guys, I'm not going to use this as a daily driver, so dumping in front of the tires is not a big deal for me.
I thought about trying to find some dual exhaust tips to put on it, I have seen a truck somewhere with that and it looked pretty cool.

Right now my exhaust is inside the frame rails also, so I might have to move it to outside to do this....

Re: Who has side exhaust?

Three-inch exhaust to the outside of the frame, turn-outs in front of the rear tires...muffler mounted behind the cab. The exhaust is positioned above the bottom of the frame rails behind the front shocks...

That looks like a pretty big hole you will be making in your frame rails. I think the outside the frame route would be easier and safer.

The frame rail and crossmember will be boxed and also peice of thick wall 4" tubing welded in for the exhaust to pass through to strengthen the area. I've seen a couple other trucks with thru/frame exhaust, one of them being the Hotchkis C10.

Yea, a little. The V6 has a unique sound though and we don't find it all that unpleasant.

Mine comes to an X near the end of the tranny then goes out at almost 45* angle infront of the rear tires. The mufflers are after the X and inside the frame. I dont have a true X pipe, but they are side by side there.

This is how I did mine. I'm gonna weld some plates
On the inside just to strengthen it more. I am a certified welder so I'm not worried about mine not being strong enough.

Re: Who has side exhaust?

We just did a burb the same way (2 1/4" in and out of Magnaflows)...good sound, good clearance, above the frame rails for the most part.
