Factory Flaw?

Noticed this today while parting a '70 2500 GMC. Seems the door got damaged before the skin was put on, no problem just seam seal away.

Re: Factory Flaw?

That's kind of cool. And it's been that way for over 40 years, no need to do anything about it now.

Re: Factory Flaw?

I think they cared enough that it's highly unusual for such a thing to be passed. Has anyone ever seen such a thing on a truck before? I'm really surprised that was allowed. I doubt it went unnoticed. It would have been so easy to fold back, then put the skin on. But,it was easier to bend it back more so it cleared the hems. People have said much of the N.O.S.parts are the rejects. I've bought plenty of doors that had no flaws and certainly nothing like that! Musta been a AUW worker's first day after being transferred over from the Ford or Dodge truck plant.

Re: Factory Flaw?

Qualitly control back then was alot different, I also have to agree with Fine69 these are trucks.
I have seen many things that make you wonder..

Here is a picture of the passenger side cab corner on my 68 with original paint.. also notice the flaw on the vermillion colored door. both have factory paint and flaws..

Re: Factory Flaw?

When it comes to paint, I have never seen an original paint truck that didn't have at least one big nasty run in the paint somewhere. These were trucks, quality control wasn't at the srtandards of today and people didn't care about fit and finish on them like they do now. It was a different time.

Re: Factory Flaw?

Can't tell but is the corner where the inner and outer come together have seam sealer or is that extra metal flashing from the stamp die that's bent up?

Re: Factory Flaw?

I have seen plenty of things that were factory that made you go WTF????

Rockers not lining up..etc....

My grandfather bought a 68 Chevy new at our local dealer. I just junked it last year because it was soooo rusty. There was a gap between the passenger fender and door that you could stick your pinky finger in. Truck had original paint. Had NEVER been taken apart.
Quite bizarre what you will find if you look.

Re: Factory Flaw?

If we were restoring a truck with a factory flaw we would make it right and consider it "correcting a birth defect" Lol

Re: Factory Flaw?

Yeah, now you pay $35,000 up for a new truck, you're gonna want to make sure it's as perfect as you can get it.Back then you just got a truck to use for work. You were lucky if you could afford new.Kinda like now.

Re: Factory Flaw?

Pleanty of flaws in all of my unrestored trucks! Thats what makes them cool. The paint quality was not good at all on these trucks.

Re: Factory Flaw?

My dad was a car salesman, and from around 67 to 74 (I may be off a year or so) he worked at a dealership that sold Chrysler, Plymouth and GMC trucks. I remember him talking about how picky people were about their new cars .. fix this, fix that.

But I really don't remember him talking about trucks at all. So you guys are probably correct. They were purchased to work back then, so a little flaw here or there was probably just ignored.

Re: Factory Flaw?

Crewcab, yes that is seam sealer to fill the void.
I have seen the misaligned rocker many times, another common one is the raingutter above the windshield is higher on driver side.
Having parted more of these than I remember I have seen some consistencies and then some like this that were just an oops.

Re: Factory Flaw?

It's kinda hard to make out in this picture, but I was parting out this 'Burb, and noticed that on the front X-member, on the right side, they missed with the rivet. It was there, it just didn't make it through the hole in the frame
