1961 ashtray

I'm embarrassed to ask this question but I would rather not force it. Is there a trick to getting this thing into the dash hole?

Perhaps my ashtray has a part that is bent an I don't know it. The thing will not go in.

I was missing mine and I got a used one, cleaned it up and painted it. I'm trying to slide it back in and it just won't go.

Man, I feel dumb. :-/

If no tricks, does anyone have a few different profiles of their ashtray so I can compare?

Thanks,
Scott

Re: 1961 ashtray

My factory radio was keeping mine from going in. Once I removed it it worked fine.

I wish that was my problem. No radio there.

It's the type that is at the top left of the center dash.

Like this one (not mine).

Yeah. I figured that was the way but I feel like I'm forcing it way too hard.

The bottom rail might be bent one way or the other.

Thanks.

Re: 1961 ashtray

I too had problems with mine. Take a careful look at the bottom of the tray and see IF the pivot hindge point is bent up. You can get it in but because of the pressure the pivot puts against the dash, it does not quite sit correctly, I'll fiddle with mine later to try to see what is the issue.

Nice to know I'm not the only one. So the pivot hinge should be at what angle relative to the bottom of the ashtray? a 90 degree? a 45? Currently it's at probably a 20 or 30 degree angle (the best way I can really describe it relative to the ashtray).

Thanks.

Re: 1961 ashtray

From my POV its a mix of bending the lip on the dash part and fiddling with the part of the ashtray. also a smear of lithium helps with the squeek.
