VIN number
Ok I can not make sense of my trucks vin number it reads
1GBHC34T....the rest i cant make out. but according to what I have seen the first three numbers should be IGC for chevy or IGT for GMC. the 4th number H is the 9001-10,000 hydraulic brakes.-- mine has that the 5th is C for a 4x2 truck.-- mine is 4x2 the 6th is 3 for the series 1 ton or 30 series.-- Mine is a 1 ton. the 7th is 4 for a 2 door truck.--- mine is a 2 door the 8th ( my confusion problem ). the letter T or possibly J. T is for the 4.8 292 v6, J is for the 6.2 diesel v8. my truck has had the motor changed but on the interior visors it has diesel starting instructions. did they put the v6 in 1 ton dually long bed pick ups? also what about the first 3 letters the clearlt do not say IGC or IGT. heres a pic.

Re: VIN number
I'd take some fine sandpaper and lightly scuff the letters and numbers.
That should add contrast and make reading the vin easier... Check this out http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forum/g...-decoding.html Looks like the "B" denotes cab and chassis vehicles... Posted via Mobile Device

Re: VIN number
My thoughts exactly, it doesnt look to be tampered with...ahhh who knows bottom line i guess is i like the truck and i have fun driving it. Thats what matters right? ooh and its a 4spd also to mu knowledge the smallest engines those came with was the 305 v6 but that truck was to new to have a 305 v6. Is there a vin anywhere else to look at?

Re: VIN number
If the VIN is located on the dash your vin number is 1GBHC34T........
1=US made G=General motors B=Incomplete vehicle H=9000-10000 C=Conventional cab 4X2 3=1 ton 4=2 door cab T=292 This most likely was produce as a vehicle without a box given the "B" code in the vin number. The dealer probably added the box. Allot of 1 ton were built this way to allow for dealer options, box bed, flat bed, utility box ect. |

Re: VIN number
Just got the whole vin off the plate, and checked it... 1GBHC34T0DV103528
Country: USA Model year: 1983 Made by: General Motors - incomplete vehicle Drive: 2WD Series: 1 ton (30/35) Body: Pickup Plant: Pontiac Serial #: 103528 So could it have been ordered without an engine, and the dealer added the 6.2. Even the man i bought it from said it was a diesel from the factory ( a family member of his bought it new). So did the plant just throw some random vin on it? According to vin calculator it is incomplete with a valid check digit of 0 and nothing under the model and engine size feilds.

Re: VIN number
Cool thanks Keith. So with all that clear I now know because of the dually set up and used to be long frame and the 292 with no color code and the "GB" for van chassis it was most likely a box truck.. My second thought would be a rollback. My dad actually had an 80s rollback, and wrecker with a 292. So Keith, If it was built with a 292, would the dealer give the option to have the 6.2 put in. And if they did would they install sun visors with the starting instructions. I am only asking because in 1983 the 292 was a very cheap option and in my eyes the dealer wouldn't mind making a few extra $$ to put the diesel in for a customer.

Here is the info packet from the GM Heritage Center archive, which will explain the available options on an 83 one ton pickup. http://www.gmheritagecenter.com/gm-h...olet-Truck.pdf One other option would be to send the VIN (and $50) to the Heritage Center and they can retrieve the vehicle invoice for your specific truck, complete with all the options it was built with (and corresponding pricing). Info is available at that same website. K

Re: VIN number
292 was a L6, not a V6. (a.k.a. Straight 6)
L for longitudinal.... |

Re: VIN number
Oh I know I must have miss typed it. I have had plenty of the old 292's only thing I hated about them was the damn distributor, constantly effed up and made em run crappy. Being a mechanic and all im soused to writting out v6 because the only things you see L6's in anymore are volvos, canyons, and pre 2005? jeep GC's
