Power steering pump leaking

The power steering pump is leaking in my 64 Stepside. It's not much, but if I let it sit overnight or two days I have a small spot about 2 inches wide. I have never really messed with power steering before but it's most likely a seal or something simple.

Any help is appreciated. My truck has a 350 engine.

Re: Power steering pump leaking

The correct way to fix the leak is to replace the offending seal. However an old mechanics trick is to add about 1/2 pint of brake fluid to the PS fluid. The brake fluid will cause the rubber seals to swell.

Re: Power steering pump leaking

Thank you for the reply, Captainfab. I've never worked on a power steering pump before. Do I just pull it off, replace the top seal, put it back on, fill it up, and go about my day? I've been looking for a Chiltons manual for my truck but can't really find one.

Re: Power steering pump leaking

Lucas has a stop leak that works great. I have used it in two different cars and no leaks since.

Re: Power steering pump leaking

Thanks, Apache. I'll look into that until I can take it apart and fix it.

Re: Power steering pump leaking

As long as its a seal leaking that will stop it. If you have a worn hose, it will not.

Do yourself a favor and get the 60-66 truck manual that came from GM. They are readily available and cost $30-45. Far better info/instructions/photos for 60-66 trucks. The chiltons manuals are generic.

Re: Power steering pump leaking

I think I will. I've read lots of great things about it. I'll just have to find one, now.

Re: Power steering pump leaking

Without sounding like an a$$, I assume you have checked the obvious, like loose hose fittings, and the reservior to pump bolts? If neither suggestion fixes the leak, you might check into what a rebuilt pump will cost. If you do decide to go that route, be aware that some pumps have the pulley pressed onto the shaft. This will require a puller to remove and an installation tool to install on the new pump.
