Went to the Portland Swap meet....

ANd after walking 10+ miles in 8 hours I bought absolutely nothing. Everything I saw of any value was sold, no aluminum grilles,no bumpers, no accessories, no rust free fenders. The only thing I saw that I was interested in was a pair of sail panels but they were a 100.00. Either parts are getting scarce or they all sold on thursday, anyone else have any luck.

Sadly I can't make it this year, but I feel your pain brother. Even last year the only reasonable thing I found was a dash insert for my GMC.

Do you think this one is worth making the 8 hour drive for and the 250 in gas I would burn.

Not sure, with the economy and gas the way it is, I`m sure even this year will suffer...last year was really large, the year before was absolutely huge..its a tuff call for anybody traveling any distance.

Re: Went to the Portland Swap meet....

For $250 in gas, I say you find someone that's already going and work out a deal with them to be your eyes for the day. If you're looking for a specific item(s), with smart phones today, you should be able to give someone an idea of what you're looking for and they can send you photos of any finds that may fit your needs. Shipping should be less than your estimated gas costs.

Of course, there is no substitution for a fun outing. Just trying to offer an alternative.

Re: Went to the Portland Swap meet....

I heard Portland was a real circus this year. I used to go almost 20 years ago, but times changed and I don't want to drive 3 hours and walk around all day for a pin saying I was there.

Re: Went to the Portland Swap meet....

I went to it yesterday .. Didn't walk away with anything either .. Never made it down to the Drag Strip to look ... Ended up staying on top .. Truck wise there was a 1966 Chevy 3/4 ton LB that had Sold for $1800.00 that I liked .. I didn't Help either with me having ads listed here of stuff for sale , and then going out to look at what ??? Staying home now the next two days .. People coming to look at things , so hopefully I'll make more than I would've spent ... Perhaps ???? Could still be a good weekend , just wish now I would've gotten a booth again this year ..

I didn't make it.
Working crazy hours, and still trying to get my 66 road worthy.

I probably won't make it there either, but it would be worth the trip for me. I really need to get down to Woodland to see the family this year.

Re: Went to the Portland Swap meet....

I just got back from there and didn't find anything of interest. I didn't make it to the expo center but it sounds like I didn't miss much. I spent all my time at the raceway. There were almost no parts for our trucks and just a couple for sale which seemed over priced to me. It's now time to kick of the shoes and pop open a beer.

Re: Went to the Portland Swap meet....

The large Sacramento swap depends on what your looking for. If your looking for heavy items, such as engines, manifolds, heads, bell housings trans, axles, wheels etc. bring your wagon, I am sure you find these. There should be some good useable doors, fenders and hoods, but they will not be mint and entireably rust and dent free. But if your looking for rare options, nos pieces, it would not be worth the trip. I really doubt you'll find any of this type of stuff anymore at any swap meet. This type of stuff is now sold almost exclusively on ebay today.

That actually makes sense.
If you're looking for difficult to ship items, then the swap meet is the place to find those. But if it can be easily shipped, they're selling it on ebay.

Re: Went to the Portland Swap meet....

Thats not entirely true, there`s still a lot of older--old school people ( the ones who have the parts ) that don`t trust e-bay....they still do business in person, I can count ten right now and man have they got the parts.

Well you're not far off. There was literally a CIRCUS next door at the Expo center.

I did make it Saturday and came away w/ a side mirror & couple nice smoothies real cheap. A lotta walking for so little.

I got a painted grille ($30) for my 65 that's in great shape and a high trans hump($5). Lots of walking between the two sites.

Smile Re: Went to the Portland Swap meet....

...well guys, it was my first time at the meet and I think it was really great and some great deals.
Here are a few examples:
-Complete set of Custom Cab trim for a '63 Pick-up: $40
(including the upper 'custom cab' plates and full side trim, 8' box, both sides....all in)
-(2) Brand new/never mounted ram horn swept back manifolds: $25
-Brand new 67 camaro front bumper: $20
-Vacuum Gauge: $5
-(2) new 72' chevy pickup (parchment) armrests: $20 (still in bags)
-Set of leaf spring overloads: $20
-New set of tailgate upper chrome trim (still in packages): $5
....man, I'm just getting started.
Most of this were in inconspicous booths and places....but it was all there....and waayyy more. I could have spent another $500 all day long and doubled my money or more on resale.
Anyhow, my two bits....oh, and I'll be back!!!
All Good
