Whining noise while driving?

I have this noise coming from my '89 Suburban when I accelerate,steady cruise, and slowing down...it sounds like a SUPERCHARGER whine. It does not do it when idling,only when moving. Any ideas? I have already replaced the center support bearing and u-joints,serviced the trans hoping to find answers,but to no avail....any help would be greatly appreciated.
I'm starting to think trans,but dont know.
Info on truck;

sounds like youre rear is on the way out. check your fluid and make sure your not running low to start

X2

If it were making the noise at idle I would say look at the trans, but if it's only doing it off idle, when moving, it's likely the rear. Does the noise go away when the truck warms up?

Re: Whining noise while driving?

The noise stays the same,hot or cold. I thought the rear would make noise only on deceleration? It also has a slight clickclickclick along with the whine. and the whine sound like,well,like I said a supercharger or even noisy gear drive.

It's definitely not a vacuum leak.

Re: Whining noise while driving?

Sounds like the pinion bearing in the rear end to me. If it was a gear howl it would do it only on accel or only on decel......

Re: Whining noise while driving?

Does it do it in neutral or park when you rev it up?

Re: Whining noise while driving?

no noise while sitting. I was told by a guy that I know,that he had the same noise on one of his vehicles. Then one day the trans gave out. The trans shop told him it had something to do with the clutches or sprag or something of that nature.

Re: Whining noise while driving?

I agree with the first 2 posters, sounds like a rear diff.

Re: Whining noise while driving?

considering you said its making a clicking noise, my first inclination would be an axle or wheel bearing. is it more noisy or clicky when turning one direction vs the other? can you tell at all what direction the noise is coming from?
i do agree with the rear end theory but in my experience (as was already mentioned), it usually does it more on deceleration.
has it always done it or just started?
either way, i would stop driving it until repaired otherwise a simple repair could turn into a costly repair regardless of which part it is, not to mention the possibility of a tow bill added on for good measure.

Re: Whining noise while driving?

The "clicking" noise can only be heard on decel close to stopping.And the sound doesnt change when turning. I honestly thought it was a bad center support bearing,but I replaced it along with all the u-joints(with American made parts!)

Re: Whining noise while driving?

Well, last night I finally got to test drive it and REALLY listen. What I found was;
1)the noise is more prominent under power(trans in gear)
2)the noise is still there coasting in neutral...also see fist comment
3)the noise seems to be coming for the back of the vehicle
So I think you guys were right, I have a rear axle issue. Now I just have to narrow it down.

Re: Whining noise while driving?

Have the gears been changed? Rearends will sound like that if there isn't enough backlash in the gears. Also, when was the last time the gear oil was changed? Over time condensation will build up and it might look like a chocolate milkshake.
