What would cause tranny fluid to leak from the speedo gear area thanks

O-rings. Remove the speedo housing and you'll find a large diameter o-ring (maybe 2") and if you remove the gear as well, I believe there is a very small o-ring on that too.

While you have it apart make sure the gear doesn't have any wear where it rides in the housing, also make sure the bore in the housing isn't egg shaped. This normally only happens on the aluminum housings.
