Chrome inner fenders
I bought a set of chrome inner fenders for my 69 C/10. Thought I'd check with some of the guys that have them. What if anything do you put on the bottom of them to keep them from rusting? under coating? clear coat? I'm going to be driving it in the rain and snow, Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks Pete

Re: Chrome inner fenders
I'm not particularly fond of undercoating because I've seen what it can do when not done properly, but it is a good way to seal the underside and quiet it down some. If you're only going to drive mostly on paved roads, rain or snow and no salt is used on the roads, my preference would be a good hard paint like rustoleum or other durable paint.
There's a lot of difference of opinions on this subject but you can try the paints first and see how that works. You can always undercoat it later, but once you undercoat it, it is almost impossible to get off. |

Re: Chrome inner fenders
I would spray the underside with Bedliner. It should keep the metal protected, look ok and last well.I was quoted $50 each for doing it though.

Re: Chrome inner fenders
I hate trying to wash inner wheel wells that are coated. Usually, they are left alone. I would paint them with many layers and then wash/rinse them frequently.
Look at most rust issues on these fenders...it's under the rad support and also where they attach to the fenders/firewall. Just keep these areas clean/sprayed off and you'll probably be fine.

Re: Chrome inner fenders
Id put por-15 or mastercoat on them.
All my sheetmetal (to be painted) will get the mastercoat silver both sides, first then the epoxy primer. Hard steel underneath the truck will get two coats of por 15. |

Re: Chrome inner fenders
Is that a brand of paint or a type of under coating?

Re: Chrome inner fenders
The mastercoat series is more paint than undercoat ? (it can be sanded and topcoated), but it is actually a primer/sealer and is used to encapsulate rust.
por 15 is also more of a paint than undercoating (in consistancy). the difference is mainly that por 15 is difficult to topcoat and it will turn color a little in direct sunlight (black to sort of a purple tinge) both are excellent rust inhibitors/encapsulates. do a search for por 15 or a search for mastercoat-------both work well, mastercoat is a little cheaper. a friend told me I should save the money and just paint the undercarriage every couple years-------- My opinion is that Im sinking a lot of money in this truck--whats another 100 bucks?? |

Re: Chrome inner fenders
The best way to keep those from rusting is never put them on

Re: Chrome inner fenders
I bought a quart of por 15 to start. I have my bed off figured that would be a good undercoating for it also. 54belair, can that be thinned down and sprayed with a paint gun to do the bottom of the bed, or just spray it straight out of the can? Also does it need hardener ? I'm kinda in the same boat as you. I'd like to do it right the first time. I don't want to take it apart every other year and do it again. Thanks for the info

Re: Chrome inner fenders
Paint em up and dump oil all around your rad support every year and they will last forever...oil is your friend.

Re: Chrome inner fenders
I was thinking there was something you cold thin with----but went back to the por 15 web site and cold not find anything about thinnning--------they did however talk about overcoating it .
If you are going to spray it--be careful----get the best mask available, you want NONE of this stuff in your lungs. If you are using it underneath, you can just paint it on with a decent brush (that you wont be able to clean!)--the stuff is supposedly "self leveling" and brush marks blend away. Now, when I used it on my 54 chevy-----I sprayed and brushed and it did in fact level. I just used it last week on the underside of my rear fenders-----I would not be happy with the results if they could be seen (I think it was the type brush I used this time. But, I am pleased with the job it does against rust. But on the rest of the truck, Im using the mastercoat on the sheetmetal and the por 15 on frame etc. Go to their website, many of your questions will be answered. |

Re: Chrome inner fenders
I've got some por 15 coming and already have some rustolauim. Think I'll do the frame and fender wells in the por 15. Hey mikey531, how's it goin? I'm sorry we never could get together, work, work, work. I had three different jobs goin last time you were here. I missed the coal classic show and I could have walked to it. Maybe next time, your truck is looking good. Forgot to mention. Got a great buy on the inner fenders, until I went after them. NC state police tacked on a $218 slow down through there state sales tax on em.
