Steering/brake help
I want to keep the 6 lug wheels on my 63 C10.
Can I use 71-72 spindles or 73-87 and 6 lug rotors from a 91 3/4 ton? What problems will I run into using the 71-72 or 73-87 spindles? Ball joints? idler arm?? tire rods? drag link? I am gonna use the brake lines/master cyl off of a 72 C10 and want to get the spindles also if it's not too much trouble to put them on the 63. What do you think? Or should I just break down and buy the earlyclassic.com conversion kit? I just can't see spending $900 for a brake job. Any suggestions on this would be GREAT! Thanks

the easiest thing to do is just get the spindles with the upper and lower A-arm still attached and bolt them n place of your current A-arms then get your six lug rotors and put them on. you should have no problem, fairly easy to do.

Yeah, I think their rotors are the same as the 88-91 3/4 ton 2WD rotors.

Mongo is probably right.. putting the control arms and spindles would probably be the easist way to go, however, one look at those newer control arms and you would probably ask yourself: why would I put these in my truck? In considering a similar swap(81 donor to 66) the control arms and bushing set from the 81 just don't hold a candle to the old style. The 81 is just plain old cheap!!! I have driven one truck (66) daily driver for almost 15 years before I had to replace both bushings and shaft on the lower control arm. The ball joints come from the 81 and fit into the newer spindles, the "old" outer tie rod ends become the "new" inner (Fatman fabrications has the tie rod adapter $50.00) drag link and idler arm remain from your 63.

I tried the 88-98 3/4-ton 6-lug rotors on my '66 C10. No go. The bearing surfaces on the spindle are further apart and the bearings are the wrong size. The studs are larger in diameter and metric - actually the same size as the same year 8-stud truck. This won't fit the stock wheels.
I wanted the 6-lug solution too, but I got a complete frame-cut 78 C10 front suspension for $75. I couldn't ignore the price advantage. Then its all stock parts when it comes to maintenance. The 5-on-5" pattern was also a perfect match for the Mark V 9" with discs I happened to pick up as well for $50. Whoohoo! 4-wheel discs for $125!

I have heard the 88-94 6-lug 3/4 ton rotors would work using 71-87 spindles. The 95-98 rotors are different. I went to AUTOZONE and had them pull a rotor for a 91 6-lug 3/4 ton(they have them in-stock for $86/each) and a 72 5-lug 1/2 ton and compared them. The rotors were basically the same diameter and thickness. The bearing hub of the 3/4 ton rotor was taller but it appeared to have the same bearing locations and used the same bearings. Hey u2slow, which year rotor did you test fit? I have found another local parts store that can get the 3/4 ton rotors for $56/each.

The difference between the 88-94 and 95-98 6-lug 2wd rotors is the ABS reluctor ring. Otherwise the rotors are the same. The a 1/2-ton of the same year trucks has the exact same fit, only 5-lugs.
I never tried the 73-87 spindles with the 88-98 6-lug rotor. Even if it did fit, what would the advantage be? They won't fit the 70-older ball joints, and the taller height will affect the rate of the camber throughout the wheel travel. After you changed the complete front suspension to 73-87, then you could successfully run the 6-lug rotors (if they fit).
