Are these standard Big Blocks? Will they fit with regular BB mounts? I have never heard of a 496. Price? I am in FL so no shipping if the price was right.

Ok...in case I missed the answer...I will ask it too. Why were the engines removed from the vehicles? Do you have anything in writing as proof of their removal reasons? Not slamming you...just a lot of money to lay out. Thanks!!!

miket, what kind of gas mileage do you get in your 'burban with the 8.1?
Also, that engine may be ugly, but from the factory they come with a plastic cover to cover up the manifold.....but I agree, it doesn't look nearly as tough as a carburated engine (just mo) Jason

The LS1 looks a lot like that, but put a cover over that says Corvette and it's a thing of beauty.

Jason71k10:
Gas mileage in 'Burbs is bad to begin with but it's subjective. I get 8 maybe around town depending on how I drive it. They have duals all they way to a single muffler doul out of the muffler into a sinlge tailpipe...I went to dual dynomax's and picked up maybe 1/2 mpgs on the highway...I average about 13mpg at 70-80mph with 4.10's....I don't get much less than that towing my Chevelle. Last time I ws on the scales it weighed out at about 7500lbs. My Dad has a cherry 90 1/2 burb with a 350 and 3.73's and he gets 10-12mpg.

thanks miket. I was just curious, cuz i'm thinking about getting an 03 2500HD, but heard the 6.0L is bad on gas too, so i thought about the 8.1...if they're both bad on gas, might as well have more power, right
How does the front suspension hold up with that engine? I heard it's about 750lbs dry!! Sorry for asking questions on your post sniper2321, but some people might want the answers to my ?'s too Jason

Jason,
My ZZ502 weighed 720lbs that I put in my 71 1/2 ton....I expected to replace the springs upfront due to the extra weight....oddly enough...it didn't dip... The 'burb is definitely nose heavy...but thats just the case with these rigs I think...I don't believe there is much difference between the 6.0 and 8.1 in weight...but look at torque 'cause thats really what you need in a 7000lb rig. Make sure you ask the dealer about the knock noise and oil consumption BEFORE you buy anything.

I bet you could carb one of these fairly easily. I think it's just a GEN6 block and heads.
Pull off those coil-on-plug coils/valvecovers and replace with the aftermarket covers of your choice, swap intakes for a GEN6 compatible ZZ502 carb intake to give you normal water passages, waterneck outlet and regular distributor location, swap out the cam for a ZZ502 roller and add a distributor and sparkplug wires, remove the waterpump and lines then plug the head water holes and put on a regular GEN6 waterpump, add an electric fuelpump to feed your carb, then rock and roll! Then sell the stock intake, coilpacks, valvecovers, and waterpump on eBay to get some of your money back. I'm probably forgetting something SC

They are not a "competely new design" engine. They're just stroked Vortec 454's , GEN6. Take a 454, throw in a 4.25 stroke crank, bore it .060 over, and presto - 496 or 8.1L.
You could build a sweet ZZ496 with one of these I would think. Here's the specs: GM 8.1L Gasoline Engine type: V-8, cast-iron block and heads Bore x stroke, in: 4.25 x 4.37 Displacement, ci/L: 496/8.1 Compression ratio: 9.1:1 Valve gear: 2 valves/cyl, OHV Fuel induction: Sequential multiport Horsepower, hp @ rpm: 340 @ 4200 Torque, lb-ft @ rpm: 455 @ 3200 Recommended fuel: Unleaded regular Max GCWR, lb: 22,000 Max towing capacity, lb: 15,800 Option price: $850
