49 Dually.

Hey Guys,

I just thought I would post a couple of pictures of the engine for the beast.

Also I am completely missing the whole steering assembly for the 4400. The Steering box and Column being that it is a 1 1/2 truck is there a cheap alternative to going back to stock??

Thanks in advance, Being that it is my birthday in a few hours, it was a great day playing with the new engine.

Shane

Re: 49 Dually.

Since most likely you are going to have to go to right hand drive that presents issues of it's own.

If it was a left hand drive steering box you needed I have one but the shipping costs would be prohibitive. It would have to be a trade deal and not a sale deal though.

Re: 49 Dually.

mr48chev,

Does the Lh/Rh change?

I wonder where I can get one without a core exchange?

Can you use the original Steering box with an after market column?

It seems hard to find anyone that lists parts for the bigger trucks? its hard to know if a standard part would fit the 4400.

I need to sort the steering out asap.

Thanks Shane

Re: 49 Dually.

It may be a good time to look into power steering for your truck. You should be able to find a power steering pump that bolts to your engine. I have heard (but not tried) that Toyota Land Cruiser steering boxes can be adapted to these trucks. Power steering is something that I would like to put in my truck in the future.

Re: 49 Dually.

Trekster,

Do you know if there is information available for this type of fitment.

Thanks Shane

I don't have any specific info other than it is an idea that I have heard about. Search this site or google it. If I find anything I'll post it.

Re: 49 Dually.

thanks for that, I enquired on a similar kit with someone and they said it wouldn't fit the 4400 as it has the bigger split rims??

It is so hard to find information on the 4400 and what fits it from the 3100 etc range and what is different.

Thanks from the Wild West

Shane

Re: 49 Dually.

Just looked at this thread and have a couple of comments. The factory assembly manual shows all the different stuff required for right hand drive modification. It also should show the differences and similarities for 3100 to 4400 conversion. Very good investment (around $25 all over the internet and ebay) for what you are doing.

Re: 49 Dually.

Google shows a lot of different ideas for installing power steering in these old trucks. If you are good at fabrication you should be able to do it. It may be easier to find a stock column and install it.

Keep us posted.

Re: 49 Dually.

Trekster,

Thanks, I am OK at fab not good so a kit would be great!!!

I am not using this truck as a daily or a race car so no PS isnt a big issue, but I need a steering asm and column regardless.

Thanks Shane
