help with my 3 speed, just craped out!
hey guys, i have a 62 gmc sub with v6(305) 3 speed and the trans just went out, i have been looking on some posts but cant find the answers to my questions.
1. can i take a 3 speed trans off of a straight 6 and bolt it to my v6? 2. what auto trans will bolt on to my v6? 3. will an s10 5 speed bolt up to thr v6? thanks !! guys for helping me with my stupid questions. Malex |

i think that gmc v6 has a diff bellhousing pattern than the straight sixes. it may have the same as some v8s but i could be wrong .dont have experience with them

I used to swap 3 speeds in my '64 GMC about every 3 months. Never had a problem finding one at the junk yard. If the bellhousing is different pattern its at the block...trans is nothing special.

When you say "Crapped out" what does that mean exactly? They're not hard to do maintenance and repairs on.

Malex you will need the factory adapter to put an automativ behind your v6.

just for information inline six bellhousings are the same bolt pattern as V8s
not sure about the GMC stuff though I currently using a bellhousing off my old 250 inline six on my 1987 350

Well becareful you don't get a 63-67 bellhousing off a Chevy II! ...It'll bolt up to a L6 & a V8 ok, but the throw-out lever is positioned in a different location then the standard 9 oclock location. FYI ...Chevy II throw-out levers are positioned at 7 oclock!! ...AND YES, I know that the hard way!!!

oh btw my saginaw 3speed, 3rd gear syncro went out 2 days ago too. I'll be fixing it though

well guys i tryied to swap out my 3speed yesterday only to find out the new one wont work!.... oh well :/
    the last pic is of the new 3speed that wont work on my 62sub..

Here is some Info:
3-Speed Transmissions GMC used the The SM-318 as the standard 3-speed tranmission in GMC series 1000 & 1500 trucks. In 1963 they also offered the New Process 746G as a Heavy Duty option for 1000, 1500, K1000 & K1500 Series trucks. In 1964 the Warner T-89B was offered as an option for P/PB1000, P/PB1500 & P/PB2500 series chassis. I have the 305 v6. I replaced my whiny saginaw with a Muncie 3 spd floor shifter, had to cut out a hole in the floor cover for it to work and change out the yoke for it to work. Bolted right up. I believe it came out of a Chevelle and before that, it was bolted to the back of a 305 v8. Bellhousings should be mostly the same. Input shaft is much more stout on the Muncie, and overall a way stronger tranny.

man sorry it didnt work out.
my 3 speed just crapped out on me today. I lost 3rd gear synco a few weeks ago. but I wanted to drive it today. well I was in 3rd then had to down shift to second and I had nothing in both 2nd and 3rd so i tried 1st and it jammed up.. I blame the truck sitting for over 2 years. oh well I have a 3speed od that Ive been needing to put in anyways.
