I've never seen one of whatever this is. My guess? A Warp drive coil.

Mike It looks to be an aftermarket under/overdrive unit. And with it you can make a 3 speed atuo in to a 6 speed or a overdrive into an 8 speed auto. The newer ones are eletronicly controlled whereas the older units were man/electric by a switch. They are built to take crazy torque and power over 1000hp and tq from what I remember.

I thought the GV was only a single speed overdrive, and was thusly smaller. That thing is huge, looks like it could have 2-3 gears. I'd like to know what it actually is.

Actually I think it is a late Borg warner t-case. You just can't see the right side or front driveline.

Nope - a GV is a gear "splitter" - your o/d essentialy comes out of the spilt of your auto trans's final gear. So, in a TH400 or TH350, your "o/d" comes from the 3rd gear split.

They are expensive. I priced one when considering my T5 swap... It wss around $2400 total. Thus my T5 swap. But they are nice nad incredibly sturdy. Trans and rear will both break before this thing.

In fact, I saw one on the gorgeous hugger/white 69 (or maybe a 70) swb of a member at the LA Roadster show this week. Got me to thinking about if for a different project I'm thinking about. Trying to eek a few extra mpg out of a big block.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the splitting idear, I, as most, would buy it mainly for the o/d part of the final gear ratio. Just think of it as an expensive way to maintain yoru stock trans and convert to single driveshaft in a lwb simultaneously Kinda kidding - they are expensive, but they are also very nice units.

EDIT: Sorry Oldgoalie-you posted in between BR3W City and me while I was typing (hunt & peck style...) - I was responding to him. I'm not 100% certain it's a GV unit, but sure looks like a gear splitter of some sort.

Look at the font end. Sure looks like a 4X4 to me.

I think you are correct. I see dual shocks, leaf springs and an axle tube on the front of that chassis.

My guess is that is a NP241 transfercase.

I have an acquaintance that is trying to sell his 74 motor home which is still in pretty good shape. he was asking 4,000.oo but has been offered 2200. which he says he may let it go for. the reason that I am mentioning if is if some one who is doing up a 1t this may be an interesting buy. it has a 454 in it with a 400 with a GV unit(he had it installed). newer dual wheel rear axle( i would imagine would be a decent ratio also) and whatever else they need

You can get one with driver drop (ford) or pass drop (chevy).

There were passenger drop NP241's used in the '88-'91 V-series trucks and Suburbans.

After looking at this again, I think 62 short step is correct. It does look more like a NP208.
