question about painting center caps
i currently have 5 lug on front and 6 lug on back . i was planning on painting my wheels this weekend. (depends on my other post). i'm thinking of sanding the center caps and painting them the same color. has anyone else done this? what is under the bowtie decal if i choose to remove it? the rear center caps are chrome looking and i know the silver paint won't match, but it wouldn't stick out like they do now. what y'all think?
front wheel(also the one that burned up the bearing) the rear wheel |

Re: question about painting center caps
well i after i got home from getting the bearings fixed i thought i would spiff up the wheels some.I bought a $30 drill and a wire wheel from walmart. i know you get what you pay for. i could stop it by hand.if you pushed against the wheel hard enough to strip the paint it would quit spinning. i put it back in the box and bag with the receipt. it's going back.
you can not use one of these to prep one of these. |

Re: question about painting center caps
i went ahead and did the best i could, i know it probably wont last with out good prep work, but these aren't my permanent wheels. i used a little handheld mouse sander on the flat part of the center cap. used Rustoleum silver metallic paint.

Re: question about painting center caps
That looks pretty good. I'm thinking of doing something similar. My truck has truck rallies with center caps that have seen better days. I have long term plans for bigger wheels, but have thought about cleaning/painting my wheels but wasn't sure what to do with the center caps. So you just sanded them and painted them with metallic silver paint? Did you mask of the bowtie sticker? Did you look into getting them re-chromed? I wonder what that would cost.

Re: question about painting center caps
i primed them and painted just the bottom part. i just put masking tape over the tops and around the chrome looking part. these are just temporary wheels. i didn't check to see about chroming. if i ever get the rear to 5 lug i'll get some new wheels. i wanted to take the bowtie decal off but i think there is a hole behind it.

Re: question about painting center caps
I restored a couple sets of rallys recently. I had the wheels sandblasted, then primed, painted and applied a couple coats of clear. On the caps, I used the same color silver to paint the base, then worked over the chrome part with rubbing compound and chrome polish. A couple of them were pretty beat up, but with a little work they cleaned up well.
Finally, I bought some new bowties and screws from PT. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=512551 I don't have a real good "after" shot but you can see the improvement.

Re: question about painting center caps
IMO I think the Argent silver from Eastwood looks really really close to the original wheel color. That is all, nothing else to see here, move along....
