Quiet mufflers

I am on the hunt for a quiet muffler for my turbocharged L6 motor that is not excessively restrictive. I will be running an electric exhaust dump so I can always open it up when I want. Any suggestions???

I just picked my '71 K10 from my local exhaust shop and had them put on a dynomax 17733 single drivers side as original. It has a low throaty sound at idle but to me was quiet going down the road. I don't know maybe this isn't as quiet as you might want but I am really happy with it so far.

x2 on Magnaflows. I wanted quiet as well. Exhaust shop swapped on a number of brands including cheapo turbos while they were building my system. Magnaflows were quietest.

x3 on the Magnaflows. The longer the case you get the quieter it will be, the larger cross section, the deeper (and a little more quieter) it will be.

They are about as free flowing as you can get while still being quiet. Honestly, you probably won't need THAT big of a muffler to keep it quiet and get rid of the rasp, as that turbo should take care of a good bit of that. I would say a 22" case oval should take care of your needs.

I too was looking to quiet my exhaust down. So last Friday, I just had some Dynomax Super Turbos installed (20"case). In the last 5 years, I've had Flowmasters (drone cases) and Spin Techs and now Dynomax and they are just what I was looking for. Quiet but not stock sounding. I have nothing bad to say about the Spin Techs, I'm just getting old.

how long are your guy's exhaust that you have magnaflows and it's quiet? I got 3 inch flowmaster 40's on mine and it's not much more than mufflers and dumps and I need something quieter on it, it's going to get me in trouble.

I just swapped out stock manifolds/ True dual glass packs to Hooker Long Tubes with the magnaflow 2.5" dual kit with X pipe.

I can't believe how quiet/smooth it is. Nothing like being quieter and picking up 20-25 to the wheels.

I have Dynomax on my ZZ502, and they're very quiet at idle and around town, no droning. When you open it up it sounds good, but never annoys me in traffic, etc.

They also make one now with a spring-loaded bypass for an even larger quiet/load difference but haven't seen them in person.

I'm actually looking for a dynomax setup for our trucks, don't think they make them yet unfortunately.

I have talked to a few people who have the Dynomax VT's (spring loaded deal) and they have a clank everytime the flapper hits and to make it worse I have been reading there has been some failing... i.e. last thing I want to have to screw with. Thanks for the info! Keep it coming if you have more!

Longbed, I run 3" Hedman headers into 2 1/2" aluminized with my 327 High Perf. and my 2 cents is Flowmaster 70's with ceramic split tips. The tips really quiet it down but cost me about $65.00 each and the 70's are the quietest in the Flowmaster line. It has a great and unusual look and sound

The magnaflows work sometimes. I have a buddy that put magnaflow exhaust on his fox body mustang. It did get a little quieter, but not quiet enough to avoid the modified exhaust ticket. It was the quietist exhaust he could find for that car and was still way loud. All depends on how the engine is built...

No, it depends on which muffler he selected. Short, small cases won't do much, the big case long Magnaflows will silence it.

Had big case long ones...not sure how long or big but bigger than a flow or cherry bomb, did not "silence it"

Not saying a maganaflow isnt the way to go, because they are quieter if you get the right one, just saying some engines will never be quiet.

A magnaflow the size of a 40 series flow master, or a regular cherry bomb will not quieten much at all, but the ones closer to the size of a stock muffler will.

The way the engine is "built" has nothing to do with the final sound, at least as far as the exhaust note. You can quieten down a top fuel dragster enough to sound like a stock honda if you want, but it would take a muffler the size of a Volkswagen and knowledge of resonant frequency tuning.

More needs to be known about your buddy's setup to know what was wrong. Such as was it dumped? Side exit? Short pipes after the muffler? Too large of pipe or tips? Each of which can mess with the resonant frequency of the exhaust, affecting how it sounds in the car, and reflecting off of nearby objects.

This engine is an L6 it has a turbo cam so it is not radical without hardly any overlap. tuned for the turbocharger. I will be running 3" the whole way back dumping out in front of the drivers side rear wheel. I currently have flowmasters delta 50 series on my 94 chevy and they have too much drone! I used to love them but on long rides they are annoying.

your turbo is a muffler
the drone on your 94 will not be there on your turbo'd 6

To some extent, it does muffle the noise, but the potential for drone is still there and the waste exhaust gases from when his wastegate is opened will not be muffled at all.

On my '78, 383 stroker with AFR 195 heads, Lunati 284 cam, I ran quad exhaust to quieten it down. As dracula4999 stated, some motors are not going to quieten down.

I originally had Corsa DBs (before they stop making individual mufflers) and opted to run a set of generic turbo mufflers in front of them. It's quieter, but it still screams if you get on it.

I've also heard of guys adding a glass pack in front of existing mufflers to help quieten things down.

Following this thread, as I plan to add exhaust to my '72 next month. Currently it has stockish Goodwrench crate motor, headers and glass packs (from previous owner). Not a big fan of glass packs. Planning on going with dual magnaflows, at least 18 inches and possibly an xpipe.

Try adding a resonator in addition to a muffler.

I needed to try and quiet down my exhaust but didnt want to get rid of the mufflers i had. i added two magnaflow round muffler/resonators in addition to the mufflers. I placed them in front the crossover, with the mufflers behind the crossover. You can go quieter by placing the resonator behind the muffler.

A resonator is nothing more than a cherry bomb or glasspack. they are a straight through design so they wont hamper the flow of the turbo.
