Eaton HO52 Hub Outer Bearing Retaining Ring

So I goofed up installing the new inner/outer races in the drum/hub assembly for a 68 C-20. I forgot to install the inner cone and retaining clip before the outer race is pressed in. As the OE bearings were not tapered, and the new ones are, is it really needed to have the clip in on tapered bearings? From what I can see it only secures the race.

FWIW, there is a small step on the axle ends that capture the cone. The other side has the washer/nut combo to pre-load the bearing. So...what d'ya think?
