Does anyone use a tumbler for bolt restoration?
if so how well does it work what kind of media do you use?
also do you have any pictures of it |

Some of the bolts were Zinc plated, while a lot of the undercarriage, suspension, bracket, and others were not. Media blasting would work much better than tumbling, due to the fact that most of the bolts are going to be pretty rusty. As for the plated stuff it, I think it would be cheaper to just buy new bolts. Home depot and Lowe's carry a pretty good selection of plated and stainless bolts and they aren't too bad on price.

I've used a Harbor Freight rock tumbler, with "rust cutter" media from Eastwood. Took almost a whole day to get anywhere with it, but a rock tumbler turns very slowly. Worked pretty well otherwise.
New school vibratory tumblers are way more efficient. Check Summit Racing's tool catalog. Don't have any pics of my rig because I loaned it to a friend in 2006. Still haven't gotten it back. For my VW stuff I buy hardware from boltdepot.com, south coast stainless, or Gardner-Wescott. Last edited by D.FENS; 07-12-2012 at 09:05 PM. Reason: Added info |

if your going to replace the bolts, i would go to http://www.totallystainless.com/ they last long time and they have kits that dont cost alot.
