Talking Added a TVS 1900 Supercharger to my 5.3 Swap...

I recently decided that I'd like to have more fun in my K5. So when a smokin' deal popped up for a Eaton TVS 1900 Supercharger with less than 5k miles on the clock, I jumped on it. It shares the same head unit with the latest CTS-V and new Camaro ZL1. These units are all intercooled too.

I also picked up a the meth/water injection kit that was on the same truck, made by Snow Performance. I hooked it up to a Hoobs switch set to 5 psi. The spray nozzle is inside the air intake tube.

Since this kit was intended for a 2007+ Silverado, it needed a few mods to work on my '86 K5 with a 2001 5.3. Nothing huge, the biggest mods were a 2007+ Silverado water pump to clear the blowers idler, the heat exchanger modified to fit behind my grille, and fabbing a throttle cable bracket since all 2004+ Silverados came DBW instead of throttle cable.

I also upgraded to a Edelbrock 90mm throttle body since the blower is already setup for a 4-bolt 2007+ pattern. Plus you don't want/need any restrictions on the intake side of a SD blower.

A few other mods I did was drilled/tapped the lower intake for 3/8" NPT and 1/8" NPT to allow use of a IAT sensor after the internal intercooler. This way the PCM has the actual air temps entering the engine to adjust the timing better. The 1/8" NPT was connected to a Tee and used for the Hobbs switch and a boost/vacuum gauge inside the cab.

I finished the installed today, still needs a base tune since it will be running as Speed Density with a 2-Bar MAP sensor instead of the factory MAF and 1-Bar MAP sensor. Hopefully I get it in to my buddy's shop tomorrow (Wed) to get it Dyno tuned. I still need to hookup my AEM Wideband gauge too.

Anyway, I'll post updates as the come.

Take care guys!!

Re: Added a TVS 1900 Supercharger to my 5.3 Swap...

Just got back from the dyno.....

She made 430/440 HP/TQ to the wheels with conservative timing and 7 psi of boost.

Base HP was 245 on a bone stock 5.3 (no cam, headers, etc).

I think I can live with that....

Yup, air intake temps under full boost is only 10 degrees above outside air temp @ WOT too.

I haven't received my copy of the dyno sheet yet, but the torque curve was as flat as a board too.

Re: Added a TVS 1900 Supercharger to my 5.3 Swap...

A week later and I have surpised a few folks with this old square, especially yesterday against a late model Dodge diesel that was heavily modded on the edge of town. He was prob used to picking on gas trucks, but this time he picked on the wrong square. The look on his face was priceless as I waved just as I was pulling past him.

I've won countless races over the years in countless cars, its best when they have NO IDEA what just happened in an old truck that isn't suppose to have enough power to get out of its own way.

If it makes you feel any better, it doesn't sound blown.

Working on it, I don't have any friends with a video camera.

Dyno vids:

Ordered a RevMax 9.5" Billet converter today, 3600 stall. Might swap to 4.11 gears next to replace the current 3.42's.

the stall is really gonna make it come alive. 4.11 gears will make this thing a monster. have any 1/4 mile times?

Converter is in, although now I have completely wore out the factory Gov-Bomb posi.

I have a line on a 9.5" 14 bolt w/6 lugs & 3.73 gears that my buddy will convert to a 5x5 lug pattern. I'll have him weld the tubes to the axles at the same time. Depending on funds, I might upgrade to a Detroit TrueTrac too.

LOL those guys are priceless, running a zillion pounds of boost and looking for naturally aspirated trucks to mess with.

I know its gotta piss them off, those trucks are $50k+ new, plus the lift, rims/tires, and then of course the exhaust and the performance mods....

After all they spent, they get their a$$ handed to them by an old truck that sounds nearly stock (minus the exhaust).

Classic.

love your k5! makes me itch to get mine swapped over to an ls powerplant. i've surprised quite a few cars with my ls swapped 91 z/28. the best was a C6 corvette. he thought he was just going to roll around me on the highway. haha, at the end he was so embarrassed he wouldn't even stop and talk to me.
