Where is this leak splatter coming from?
Ok. Just did my radiator flush and put a 180* stay since it did not have one. During the 6 hour process at idle to flushing my coolant system these leaks occurred. Where is it coming from? Anyone experienced these leaks before because I can't pin point it. I hope it's not the block itself. It is leaking when the motor is running...

Re: Where is this leak splatter coming from?
I know one of the problem is the valve cover gasket needs to be changed, but I have no clue where the front leak is coming from? Should I change my PCV and breather as well to minimize pressure??

Re: Where is this leak splatter coming from?
what year truck/engine? Asking to determine if you have a clsoed pcv system. Not sure if you're asking about oil leaks or anti-freeze leaks, or both. Anyway - the oil on the frame in the locations you're talking about could be a few things -
1) if not a closed pcv system (i.e. older engines, etc - like my 66's) then it could very well be oil vapor that comes out of the oil filler tube breather that gets splattered by the fan. Take a peak around the firewall near the master cylinder - that's another common place for it to accumulate when you're driving - it gets blown back on the driver side firewall by the fan. or 2) could be a front main seal leak in the timing cover. But that doesn't normally "spreak" by the fan "that" much - but it can a little. I'm guessing you have a closed pcv system (i.e. a pcv valve and valve cover oil fill hole) but mentioned #1 just in case. Might look by the timing cover. I couldn't really see what you were talking about on the rear side(s) in the pics, hard to tell against a black block. Valve cover leaks can be decieving - that gunk gets everywhere, but seems like it's more than could possibly leak from a vc. Anyhoo. When re-installing, I only put RTV on the valve cover side of the gasket, none on the head side, and just barely tighten them down. Most overtighten them, including me. |

Re: Where is this leak splatter coming from?
...it's a '78 350 small block. I'm thinking the front may be a main seal and rear a valve cover gasket and pressure screw valve behind the top of the motor. I'll prolly just have the while engine done with new seals and gaskets by a mechanic. I have Ni work space to lay down the parts and my city does not condone to working in the driveway. :/
