75 GMC sierra classic face lift and conversion to short bed

hi guys

i bought 75 long bed fleet side gmc sierra.
i got it as it is
6 cylinder(292ci) ,automatic gear and already face lifted to 81(i think)
the car is out of country and overseas.

my plane is converting to short bed step side and changing the engine to LS1

car has some body work ,need paint and need some new parts.
it doesn't have rust, just little bit in driver floor pan ,but the serious problem is;somebody stole the complete engine wiring after socket, the car had 12 circuit engine wiring and i could not find it yet. i need the color engine wiring diagram.
the other problem is preparing the parts,as i told the car in not in U.S
but i have to do it.
need your technical help for cutting the chassis and all work depend on that.

here is some pictures:

Re: 75 GMC sierra classic face lift and conversion to short bed

Good starting point. Where overseas is it? And forgive me for asking, but why not just find one closer to home?

There are several ways to go about cutting the frame, 1st measure 6" off the rear cab mounts, you'll be removing 14" of material, I like an interlocking fit, so I measure 20" with 3" top and bottom interlocks, think the z shaped pieces in tetris. Brace it with angle iron and clamps. Measure a bunch of times to make sure its square and tack it together. Set the bed on to make sure your wheels are centered, pull it back off and finish weld. Then fish plate. You'll also be removing about 6" off the end of the frame.

Others may have different ways of doing this, but I've done it this way on three of my friends trucks and came out golden.

I don't have a scanner, and this isn't to scale, but hopefully this helps.

thanks for your respond slammed427 ,well the car is in Iran, was imported in 75 by the american pilot, car kept in good condition. that's why im telling i have problem with preparing the parts, cause of sanction.
i saw different cutting way with others, and i didn't see the way you described ,but i think its the best.your measure was helpful. but one thing ;which tools i need to cut the frame ,any kind of saw?what about joining,do i need TIG?or something else?

already i bought a step side bed(long one).
and right know i don't know how to cut the bed? i think i need change the steps, but im pretty sure i cant find it in Iran.

oh i forgot i bought and engine wiring but 14 circuit,i don't know is it compatible with my car or not.

here are the bed pics:

Re: 75 GMC sierra classic face lift and conversion to short bed

A plasma cutter would be the easiest way to cut it. I've done it with a torch once, and a sawzall the other times. As far as welding it, a 220 Mig will do the job just fine. Shortening the bed prolly won't be too bad with the stepside, but I've never done it. I'm pretty sure the numbers would be the same, but don't quite me on that.

As far as the steps go, try and narrow them. Its only metal.

And the 14 curcuit will be fine, as long as its for the 73-87 trucks. Anything you don't need just tuck out of the way.

Re: 75 GMC sierra classic face lift and conversion to short bed

Measure six inches off the back of the cab, and start laying out your cuts based on the diagram I posted above.

The stepside will be easier to cut down than a fleetside. Try setting your bed on before you cut the frame, remove the steps, then measure 14" beteeen the front of the flare and the front stake pocket. This will give you an idea of where to start after the frame is finished.

Take your time, measure twice and cut once.

the original one had some ding on it,and we couldn't to balance, that's why bought a better one but second hand, and just used the original yoke .

Re: 75 GMC sierra classic face lift and conversion to short bed

we did not find the short bed fuel tank, and we wanted to shorteting the tank,we did it ,but there is huge rust inside.
we talked to the person who doing sandblast and told: it doesn't make sense, and this is a unusable tank ,finally we got a blazer fuel tank and fixed it in to the chassis
well not bad

Good job on the frame. Did you turn bolt heads to make them look like rivets?

yes ,i did it and its looking good

there is someting I did a search and didn't find what I was looking for.

I am going to put the '82 body on the '75 frame.

Can someone tell me specifically what the differences are between the body mounts, and which ones I should use for my project. 82 or 75?
