Dual tires of a C&C will NOT fit under a regular bed!!!

Well I thought I had figured out how I was gonna configure my C&C but I was wrong. I bought a parts truck for the good long bed and stripped it. I did some measuring today and found that there is no way no how to get the dual rear tire under a regular bed. Wheel well is 80 inches and tires are 82-3 outside to outside, inner tubs are 49 inches and tires are 47 inside to inside so it aint happening without changing both sides of the wheel area.

So now back to the drawing board, change hubs, drums and backing plates and go with a dually bed?

Anyone familiar with super singles? I figure I can get the proper offset wide rim and run a single wide tire on it to make if look right and fit?

Oh well, any thoughts or experience would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Kevin

I don't have any answers for you but I think the super single setup would be sweet. Im sure theres a wheel out there to make that work.

i know someone around here was running those wide mickey thompson type tires under a dually. So that is probably possible with the right offset but then you have to consider bearings if it's not zero offset.

Re: Dual tires of a C&C will NOT fit under a regular bed!!!

I think you could do a fairly even split since it seem to be a couple inches off both ways. Together they measure 17 inches inside to outside of the dual tires. So if I ran a 12 inch tire on a 10 inch wheel built to center I would be good. Now who makes a tow rated 12 inch tire? Something like on the front of a dump truck.

Why don't you just use the rear end from the parts truck??

Do you need the whole bed floor between the tubs? Couldn`t you just widen the tubs a few inches, I think that`s what most guys do.

Re: Dual tires of a C&C will NOT fit under a regular bed!!!

Sorry for the delayed response I was flying late yesterday for my 1 week of work this month.

Was prepared to tub it, but they don't fit inside the outter fender of the bed. THe rear end of the parts truck is a 12 bolt, not good for the dually purpose.

If you are running a regular bed on a C&C chassis please let me know what tires and rims you are running. The math don't work with a tape measure.

I will look at the link later, at work now.

Re: Dual tires of a C&C will NOT fit under a regular bed!!!

Spencer, From your avatar it looks like your bed sits higher than your tires and they stick out a bit. I figure there will be little to no suspension squawt even with a goose neck so that should work with a simple tub. Got any better pictures.

Thanks, Kevin

Re: Dual tires of a C&C will NOT fit under a regular bed!!!

Can't go with big tires on a conventional dually rim, nobody makes a wide one. If you know of someone who makes 'em, I need that contact info!
Next wider for you is a conventional single rear wheel 1-ton, the outer part of the hub can be machined down a bit so the dual rims will fit.
If it comes down to that, the guys that want to run semi-truck wheels and tires will kill for that C&C rearend, it's a fit for them without tubs. I bought a C&C for a few parts, sold the rearend for $200 more than I paid for the entire truck.

Re: Dual tires of a C&C will NOT fit under a regular bed!!!

Thanks, I am thinking a super single can be done with an aftermarket wheel and tire. I have heard something about a tread to convert to the super single by wrecker, ambulances and such. I didn't pay attention at the time so I have to get my facts straight but there is something out there. It appears Spencer has done the swap I am trying with dual rear tires so I'm hoping he knows the trick, experience beats speculation everytime.

And by the way, no way would I sell a locked 70 with 56s for $200. With a 63 inch WMS to WMS it is a prime canidate for a serious CJ build. I also understand that I can change the hubs, drums and braking plates and have a standard width dually rear (and a lot less work than swapping axle assemblies).

Re: Dual tires of a C&C will NOT fit under a regular bed!!!

I'd hang onto the C&C rearend, too, if I had a need for one. Geared right, too!
I'm at the stage where I think I've figured out how to build what I need. I want a 10" wide steel dually wheel. I know I can order just centers and if I can find a 15" hoop with the right center diameter, I can fit 'em, I have a few friends with access to turntable welders. Mine will be stupid fun (turbo'd 565), I want to be able to buy tires that will hook on a track and there's no size with the selection available for 15's.

Re: Dual tires of a C&C will NOT fit under a regular bed!!!

If you would keep me in the loop on the rims. One of my thoughts was to use something that I could match up front. Factory looking steelies would be perfect for my set up. If you get them built, I might be a buyer.

I need a load bearing tire not a sticky, not thinking the 350 is gonna have an issue, today anyway. I have a 450+ HP SB sitting on a stand in my shop with no immediate home, soooooooooo.........................................

Re: Dual tires of a C&C will NOT fit under a regular bed!!!

One ton CC used the GM14 bolt rear. The inner wheel is close to the frame. The frame is standard SAE 34" wide. The single wheel 14 bolt used diffrent hubs/ brakes/backing plates. The dual wheel pickup used a Dana 70 wide rear unit. CC units were made available with the wide rear end unit as a SEO option. Most CC trucks that were made into ambulances/rescue units had the wide axle fitted.

What size tires are you looking to run? You can get a factory 9.75 wide steel wheel. Will a 15 inch wheel fit over the brakes on a 14 Bolt.

I think something in the 12 inch range would work, probably not necessary but have good foot print and carry a load. And of course look good. I am not aware of a factory 9.75 rim so please enlighten me. I have concerns as to if a 15 will fit over the drums but I'm not sure. I know the 16 would fit over the front calipers.

V30, I just assumed it was a 70 guess I better check.

Camper Special wheels, from the early 70`s. They were 16.5X9.75, they ran them on the rear with 12 inch wide tires for the xtra load capacity, but stay with SRW. I have a set for my K30.

Was not aware of them, I wonder if they can be found/had for reasonable money?

Got a picture?

I wounder how hard it would be to find a tire?

Why do I use so many question marks?

Re: Dual tires of a C&C will NOT fit under a regular bed!!!

Thank you, so the outers sit above the tires, there is no way I can see the inners fitting, but moving them in and widening them is no big deal. Now back to the regularly scheduled program, snatchthe flat bed pull the inners and set the bed on and start working on the extention.

Thanks again, maybe Dan can add his 2 cents, I'll try to PM him.

body lift or suspension lift, unless you cut the inner wheel wells and widen them.
this is 4" suspension lift.

Sweet truck, love the color. Mine is a 2WD for towing so no lifting, moving the inner fenderwells is the plan today. Simple enough.
