Dropmember LS Swap Help...

Hey guys,

Specs.... 77 SWB, 5.3, Dropmember

I'm thinking of switching tranny's from a 700r4 to a 4l80e trans with my 5.3 Swap with DM. Seems to be the better way to go. No TV cable problems, better gearing imo, stronger trans all together...

My question is how is the fitment? Will I have to trim the firewall or front of the cab floor? I just finished the cab tunnel for the 700r, of course, and was presented with a good deal on a trans. I have the "high hump" trans cover, and had to trim a little off the front of the cab, but hoping I don't have to take anymore off. Is the 4l80e that much bigger than the 700r?? My tunnel should clear, I'm more concerned with the front where the trans bolts to the motor...

Re: Dropmember LS Swap Help...

The 4L80 e is much larger than the 4L60 and you will need to modify the floor pan/trans cover for clearance.

If you aren't planning on putting down huge horsepower I would recommend sticking with the smaller 4L60e.

Re: Dropmember LS Swap Help...

Thanks Nate!

I have my floor pan "tunneled" and "clearanced" the trans cover, but didn't realize the 4l80e was that much bigger and was built a little more, I don't really need the beefed up trans. I'm only going to be running about 350hp.

Re: Dropmember LS Swap Help...

The 4L80 is also longer as well, so you would need to modify your drive shaft.

Re: Dropmember LS Swap Help...

I did find that measurement , so I was planning on that. Was just concerned about the lower firewall.

The 4l60e is basically the 700r4 but electronic and... newer/stronger? If I go with the 2000+ version?

Re: Dropmember LS Swap Help...

Worse case you can have the 4l60 beefed up if you want more power.Yeah i think the 4l60 is just a 700r4 updated.
