Factory split Rims?

I recently picked up another parts truck to disassemble and put onto here but the guy said his dad had a gmc and they swapped wheels on it since his dad wanted the slotted mags that were on his, and two of the rims on the GMC are the split-rim style with hubcap clips. I personally have not seen these on a half-ton but mainly on bigger trucks. Does anyone know anymore about those? I have never seen them on a half ton. The truck they cam off of was a 66 GMC, CC, BBW, A/C etc. I tried buying that one while i was there too but his dad was "going to restore it someday" along with the other 4 vehicles in line to be restored. But any information would be helpful. Thankss

Not to hi-jack your thread but what about 16.5" 6 lug wheels? I bought my 64 C10 Fleet with them on it and was wondering if they were original....

These multi piece rims were optional on 1/2 tons also. Back in the 50's and 60's, if you wanted to carry maxium payloads, the heavy duty multi-piece ( flat center) rims and heavy duty bias ply tires were always recommended by the dealer over the standard one piece(drop center) rims.

Here is my 1966 c10 with 6 lug split rims from the factory.



Never really looked into them because im not keeping them but i believe they are 16.5" diameter with bias ply tires. One of the options on the build sheet involved "heavy rear springs" and as you can see the dealership in california put a step bumper on. So I'm assuming they are original wheels because the truck was unmolested and I have 2 of the center caps that fit. Maybe part of a towing option?

I have a 1/2 ton SWB. These are the rims that came on it. They are 15x7, I think. I like them, and would like to reinstall them on my truck. Unfortunately, the PO sold 2 to someone for a trailer, so I have 3 and really would like to find another 2. Been looking for a few months, you just don't see them out there. I assume everyone is scraping them, because they can kill you?

These 16.5" (both in 6 or 8 lug) wide base camper wheels could have been special ordered by the dealer when new. Just look at 60-66's super nice saddle gold K 20, It has 16.5" wheels as a special order option on his SPID. But usually, most of these wheels were sold in the aftermarket in the 60's and 70's.

Split rims are dangerous when not handled properly. People that are not trained on doing the change well enough, shouldnt do it. the shops are getting harder to find that will work on these things. and the tires are not easy to find either. They are loosing their followers quickly. I like the narrow look of them, but cant find the pie crust edge that i want for my C-20. Im not going to scrap them yet!

went through this on another forum a few years back
The standard tire for c 20 was 7.00-17.5. This was a one piece rim with tubeless tire. Many were ordered with 7.00 -15 , this tire was on a 3 piece 15" split rim. There also was an optional 7.00-17, this tire was also on a 3 piece split 17" rim.And lastly, the 8.00-19.5 was on option which was on a 1 piece rim.The 15" 3 peice split rim was safety recalled and replaced by GM with a 15" 2 piece split rim. The 16" 2 piece split rim was new for 1966.There was an aftermarket 16.5" wheel introduced by Goodyear, Firestone and Kelsey Hayes in 1964 that was popular on camper pickups.In 1967, GM started offering the 16.5" wheel as an option. Unforunately, the 16" wheel wasn't offered till the mid 70's. It is a rarity today to see a 64 3/4 ton with the original rims.

Looks like one of my past posts word for word. Actually, the term "split rim" I used is not really accurate. Its the term most people use when they see these rims. The correct term for the pickup truck multi piece rims should be "lock ring" wheels. "Split rim" wheels are a design where two pieces come together in the center of the rim. "split rim" wheels are usually found on 1 1/2 and 2 ton trucks.Yes, the "split rim" design is a bad one (never used on pickups) and no longer manufactured. The lock ring wheel, the 2 piece version, was not considered a bad design and still used up until 1975 on Chevy 3/4 ton pickups.The 2 piece lock ring wheel is not uncommon on large dump trucks and garbage trucks even today.The lock ring 3 piece version ( shown in photo above in original torquiose paint) is obsolete and unncecessary for any 1/2 ton or 3/4 ton pickup.

did you use the name "fourcoils" on c/talk ,2008. that is who wrote it

I believe the 8-19.5 would be perfect for all 3/4 tons. The wheel is hard to find, but the tires are not.It is listed in sales brochures as the optional maximum size. Unforunately,the buying public at the time did not feel it was necessary to spend the extra money.It is a common size in commercial trucks today.It is period correct and has clips for original hubcaps. It is a very tall narrow tire that helps reduce freeway rpms on low geared c 20s.

All 3/4 ton wheels up to 1968 used clips for hubcaps. In 1969, the wheels were made with bumps for the larger hubcaps.The 16" 2 piece wheel had clips from 66-68, then it had bumps from 69-74.The 16" one piece wheel (bump only) was new around 1974.The 16.5" wheel(aftermarket) had clips from 64-68. Goodyear and Firestone put factory 17.5" centers in wide 16.5 wheel. The 16.5" GM wheel used from 69 to mid 80's used bumps.It would be great to see the aftermarket create a 16" 1 piece wheel with a factory 17.5" center with clips.This would allow 48-68 3/4 ton owners to run hubcaps on a popular easy to find tires.Not all of us want to run mag wheels that drastically changes the character of the vehicle.With the thousands of styles of wheels out there, it is odd this is not available.

The pic you posted there Sodly, i have the same rims on my 66 C-20. Where did you get that pic? How old are those tires? Thats the kind of tire im looking for. The "Pie Crust" style.

Yes, those are the original 1966 2 piece lock ring wheels. They are much better than the 3 piece design used on earlier 15" and 17" 8 lug wheels.1966 was the first full year of these rims,they actually came out in midyear 1965 when the first Custom Campers were introduced to the market. NIce find,glad you found a clean one, hopefully we get to see the rest of the Custom Camper.

Thanks, Factorystock. Yes, I have all 5 wheels still on the truck, which is a recent purchase. Still needs a lot of cleaning up. Will post pics once that process is further along. Is there any way to (safely) run radials on these wheels?

I have old bias plys also, but there should be no problem using radials, I see radials on large construction type trucks with lock ring wheels all the time. Just make sure you take the wheels to a truck tire dealer only, never to a car tire dealer. It is more expensive to keep these rims since you need to get new tubes and new liners and extra charge for mounting and dismounting, but your vehicle will be period correct, not many 60's 3/4 tons are these days, and your keeping your '66 all '66. Also, always carry a good spare tire with you, just in case you get a flat and there is no truck tire dealer near by.

I love that look with the big flat ring now ...I guess it took me awhile to grow up.
Hey Factorystock - is that your truck (wheel) in the picture? I don't want to derail Sodly's thread here, but If you have a 60-66 truck I can't remember you ever posting it, and I (we) would love to see it. Don't be shy now.
EDIT: I see that since I type so slowly, 60-66 beat me to the punch. Ha! we're like a mob demanding pictures.
