Cherry Poppin 1st Post My 71 Custom Deluxe 20 Burb
So I must say this site is what persuaded me to purchase my new burb ! My husband showed me this site and it was SO impressing, it made me want to take this to another level.
So here HE is yes HE! Air-ride in the rear only for now. Under seat 2nd row air compressor mount. 396 rebuilt engine. Floor coated in a Bedliner material? I just bought it this way. Guy also threw in extra trim he purchased on the side. Not bad for the price overall. Plans are to finish the air-ride in the front, Brother is fixing the driver side rocker, rust & dents. Removing the mirrors filling in and patching the holes to put on the door edge peep mirrors. Tucked in 20's with a Hot Rodz Flat two color paint job. Color I'm still debating. So shoot me your opinions. Interior I'm not sure. All door cards are there and in decent shape original seats. Front seat is shot needs complete redoing. 2nd & Third row are great no rips/tears just dirty. So suggestions etc welcome...enjoy the pics and if you want to see anything else let me know I'll add more per request! A VIEW DURING THE DAY DENTED REAR CENTER TODAYS PHOTO WITH THE WORST OF THE RUST AND MY LIL HELPER! STEERING DASH SECTION RADIO/GLOVE BOX/SWITCHES DOOR CARDS (THEY ALL PRETTY MUCH LOOK LIKE THIS) ALSO HAVE SEAT ARM RESTS FOR ALL BENCH SEATS PROBABLY PLUS SOME... HEADLINER IS IN BAD SHAPE ALSO HAS 1/2 OF THE REAR A/C STILL INSTALLED. SHOT OF THE BACK INSIDE FROM THE FRONT SEAT. CAME WITH THE SEAT COVER. LEANING (NEPHEW WANTED TO PLAY WITH HIS AUNTS SWITCHES!) |

Re: Cherry Poppin 1st Post My 71 Custom Deluxe 20 Burb
Thanks! I can't wait to start working on it. We will see how long this will take I hope to have it done by spring/summer next year. Most likely I will do the interior myself possibly even see if I can even recover the seats myself and not sure if I should keep the interior stock or change/customize it all...
The choices are limitless! haha! |

Welcome to the board. That looks like a great project! Be sure to check out the faq section. It contains lots of low buck upgrades and fixes to common problems on these old rigs.

Looks like someone may have heated the springs to lower it and got carried away on that side. I would seriously consider getting some stock springs or lowering springs for it and replace those... LockDoc

Re: Cherry Poppin 1st Post My 71 Custom Deluxe 20 Burb
Thanks, we plant to replace with bags anyway next year. Since the rears are already sitting on bags figure may as well run the fronts.
Any suggestions on where you would start first w/a project like this? Maybe even color options? I'm going to use Hot Rod Flatz to paint it just not sure which color or colors and which schemes. I saw some people seperate the bottom under the trim and the top as a same color and I've seen them all one color except the top. Then I've seen all one color. etc. and the top can even go all the way down to under the windows. But in my case i dont have the window chrome piece. So I'm not sure. I like this with white top http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/HRF225.aspx or body http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/HRF260.aspx top http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/HRF266.aspx But my first choice was: top http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/HRF267.aspx Bottom http://www.tcpglobal.com/kustomshop/HRF279.aspx I just can't decide...interior now is black and seats/door cards etc are an off white due to age but should be white not sure if I will even keep that. May change that out too and do newer bucket seats w/a center console. etc. I just like hearing other peoples ideas if this were their "project" Thanks! |

Re: Cherry Poppin 1st Post My 71 Custom Deluxe 20 Burb
This is a LOADED 3/4 or 1 ton truck with a third row seat, and AC to boot. Congrats on finding it. I think the only thing mine has over yours is the front disc brakes, but I think that is the only real difference between a 71 and 72..
There are lots of nice aftermarket steering wheels out there that you can buy new, btw.. Entire steering columns also.. |

After seeing those springs, the "first" thing I would do is to physically check all of the safety equipment. Brakes (take the drums off and look at the shoes & wheel cylinders) , emergency brake (make sure it is working and adjusted correctly), Ball joints, (jack up each front wheel and check for bad ball joints, tie rod ends, etc.), universal joints, (check for loose joints at the front and rear of the drive shaft). I know this isn't "the fun stuff" like talking paint, interior, & wheels but if you are going to be hauling the little ones around it is the most important... Just my 2¢ worth. LockDoc

I'm with LocDoc.. Always remember the fundamentals of antique vehicle restoration, and priorities..
Make it stop. (brakes) Make it steer. (suspension and steering parts, joints, bushings, etc) Make it safe. (seats/belts, bearings, mirrors, driveshaft, horns) Make it go. (powertrain) Do you best to limit the leaks! Make it nice inside. Make it nice outside. |

Re: Cherry Poppin 1st Post My 71 Custom Deluxe 20 Burb
Welcome to the forum MzSasy. It looks like you have a pretty solid Burb to begin your venture in to hot rod trucks. I noticed you mentioned using the peep mirrors. I agree removing the current mirrors will clean the truck up a lot. I don't recommend using the peep mirrors. They look really cool, but they are useless. I had a set in the past and threw them in the trash. They are just too small, and extremely dangerous to use.
Good luck with your project...

Re: Cherry Poppin 1st Post My 71 Custom Deluxe 20 Burb
Thanks guys...this is exactly what I was looking to see/hear. LocDoc & Quadrajet I couldn't agree 100% more!!! Safety first! If the weather isn't going to be too cold in the next couple of weeks I will begin to jack it up and start looking at all the above mentioned items. Paint & etc wont come until late next year. The most important stuff will be done soon. I.E. Safety stuff. My brother is doing the body work over the winter/early next year so If its the only time he can do it I have to run w/it. Same w/paint. Id like to take it out next year but if it looks pretty and isn't safe it will sit until I do the rest of the work.
Jenn, Thanks! You're too funny. I may be persuaded to sell the mirrors we will see based on N2TRUX post I may hang on to them just in case i can't stand the peep mirrors. Either way I highly doubt I will be using these that are on it. Tow mirrors aren't what I have in mind either way. Quadrajet you're right that is about the only difference between the 71 & 72. Lolife99 - The truck used to be owned by the son of a popular garage in the area. Highly known for the lowrider scene. So I'm sure you've seen it around somewhere. No updates yet....but I promise more will come as soon as things are done or looked at. |

Just go with 71-72 sport mirrors, always a safe choice
