Seeking Wisdom

Ok. Starting rebuilding my 350 and after tearing the engine down found out that I was going to a 5 week school and shortly after returning I will be moving to Fort Polk, LA. So, I replaced rings, bearings, timing set, and the oil pump, put all back together and put it in the truck. After a rookie mistakes I got her fired up and it sounds amazing. BUT... during my rush to get things put back together before going to school, I didn't do any work to the heads and now after it runs for a little while it begins to smoke on the drivers side only. Which is why I started the rebuild in the first place. Engine was clean inside. No scaring in the cyclinder walls. Bearings were a little wore and the oil pump was weak. But nothing that should make it smoke.

I'm thinking(hoping) that I've got a head problem and hopfully its just a valve seal. I'd be interested in hearing ideas from some of you that have more experience.

Re: Seeking Wisdom

Being that you just rebuilt the engine...Id say valve stem seals. How much run time on the engine since the rebuild?

Re: Seeking Wisdom

It does sound like valve seals... you could try a heavier weight oil.. Might help... Probably won't solve the problem...

Re: Seeking Wisdom

It's more likley worn valve guides and seals.Need to pull the head and have the head reworked when you have time.

Re: Seeking Wisdom

You say you just replaced the rings. Are you sure the block didn't need to be bored?

..........or at least break the glaze on the cylinder walls with a hone. If you didn't the chances of the rings properly seating are slim to none.

Re: Seeking Wisdom

Total run time on the engine since the rebuild is about 30 minutes.

Cylinder walls were in great shape with no scaring or pitting. And I did hone the cylinders pretty good before putting things back together.

The truck sit up for several years before I started trying to get it back on the road. I always had dreams of making it a super trick show worthy truck, but now I just want to build a reliable daily driver and enjoy my truck.

It was smoking the same way when I got it running prior to the overhaul. I assumed because it was smoking that it was a stuck oil ring or a broken ring. But since it still smoking the same way I'm betting its in the heads.

Sounds like a good excuse to upgrade to something better than my 76cc smog era heads.
